LASHKA REGISTERS FACILE VICTORY IN BYERLY TURK MILLION

By Usman Rangila | 08 Jan 2024 | HYDERABAD

Col.S B Nair & trainer L V R Deshmukh leading Lashka (Antony Raj S Up), winner of The Hpsl Byerly Turk Million (Gr.3)

The on-money favourite Lashka made short work of her four rivals when lifting the HPSL Byerly Turk Million (Gr.3), Monday’s star event run over six furlongs. The withdrawal of the outstation challenger Del Aviz robbed the event of some interest, and consequently, Lashka had one less rival to tackle. Antony Raj allowed his main adversary Glorious Power to enjoy the lead ahead till the field of five had straightened for home and switched gears on Lashka as they approached the two-furlong marker. It took a couple of moments for Antony to get Lashka into her stride and once she did that, the LVR Deshmukh-saddled filly had put the issue to rest. Glorious Power fought hard for a furlong with Lashka (Dali – Lucky) but failed to repel her attack. Glorious Power gradually lost pace thereafter following which Star of Night and Star Forever took the second and third berth respectively.

Truth, the four-year old grey gelding hailing from young S. Sreekant’s yard, had lost none of his talent despite being out of action for over two months after  his sojourn to Kolkata, which was proved in the day's supporting event. Imran Chisty-piloted Truth was backed to the exclusion of his six rivals and he justified that support with a comfortable victory. Just Incredible was brushed up to set the pace for stable-mate Truth, who chose to bide his time in the rear until the field of seven approached the final turn where Painted Apache took over the running with High Command closing in on him. Truth gradually improved his position when given his head by Chisty and pounced upon High Command and Painted Apache. Truth (Pinson – Lady Be Good) surged ahead and was driven out by Chisty to claim the Kasu Brahmananda Reddy Memorial Cup. Anab E Shahi came from way behind to put in a strong run but found the winner too good. Huntingdon ran on to be third ahead of High Command.

Earlier in the day, Deshmukh led in his first winner of the day when Antony steered Trishul to his maiden success in the Agostini Plate. Top-weighted Trishul had nothing much to beat except N R I Skypower and he emerged victorious with a determined display. The latter took up the running soon after the start and had Caraxes and Trishul following him close behind. An exciting finish unfolded as both A. Imran Khan-ridden Caraxes and Trishul challenged N R I Superpower. The three went stride for stride for a while before Trishul stamped his superiority close home. N R I Superpower refused to cave in and stretched Trishul to the hilt before being forced to play second fiddle. Caraxes ended third ahead of Track Blazer.

Leo D’silva’s decision to put Worcester in the upper class paid off as he exploited his handicap and lasted out to win from the fast but late finishing D Yes Boss. Afroz Khan had no option but to allow Worcester to call the shots as the gelding was keen to come to the fore from the wide draw. Worcester, who found enthusiastic support in the betting arena, showed a clean pair of heels to his disinterested lot of rivals as they chased him without showing any aggression. It was left to the longshot D Yes Boss, who travelled wide into the straight and came flying towards the end. However, the winning post had already come to the rescue of Worcester (Dali – Isle of Avalon). The winner finished a neck better of D Yes Boss, who was followed home by Burgundy Black and Colt Pistol. Proud Mary and Splendour on Grass had left their galloping shoes behind, which probably explains their poor show.

Half an hour earlier, Pontefract had scored in a similar fashion after crushing the hopes of favourite Shadow Fax close home. Star Cruise and Pontefract disputed the lead in the initial stages of the sprint with the former entering the straight first. Shadow Fax came with a strong burst to tackle Star Cruise as Ekram Alam struggled to get Pontefract going. Eventually when he found his rhythm, D’silva’s ward Pontefract (Pinson – Superb) easily overtook Shadow Fax and then stayed put to keep stable-mate Silver Lining, who pegged back the favourite to the third place at bay. Planet Super completed the judge’s frame.

Laxman Singh-saddled Australia put in a superb show in the hands of P. Sai Kumar and registered an emphatic victory in the G. Vasudev Reddy Memorial Cup (Div-I). Australia (Knight’s Tour – Sunflower) unleashed a brilliant run when shown daylight after entering the home stretch and went cruising past the front-runners including Carlisle, who had assumed command after overtaking early leader Angelita. Trevor Patel-ridden favourite Terenga failed to gather momentum despite being hard ridden and finished a tame third behind Carlisle. Fara ran fourth.

The on-money favourite Minecraft finally had his true potential on display when graduating from the maiden ranks in his third attempt. B. Mukesh Kumar-schooled Minecraft was eased off to settle in the fourth slot as Stoli seized the initiative and had Precious and Milton Keyes racing close on her haunches. Minecraft (Gusto – Gossip) was brought with a flourishing run by Ashhad Asbar in the straight and went sailing past the leaders in the last furlong and half to score an authoritative win. Silver Act appeared on the scene late and finished runner-up ahead of Rochelle and Precious.

A rare confident approach shown by jockey NB Kuldeep saw Ampere’s Touch hit the bull’s-eye at the age of five. Four horses – American Flame, D Battle, Eminency and Ampere’s Touch were involved in a nail-biting finish with the final burst of the last named taking his three rivals by surprise in the shadow of the winning post. Neelesh Rawal-saddled Ampere’s Touch (Ampere – Pinacotheque) won by sparing a neck to Eminency, who finished a nose ahead of D Battle with American Flame a head away. Nkalanzinzi ran on late to end a notable fifth.
