BEST BUDDY PULLS A FAST ONE OVER HIS FANCIED RIVALS IN FEATURE

By Usman Rangila | 16 Jan 2024 | HYDERABAD

Trainer K Satheesh leading Best Buddy (Md Ekram Alam up), winner of The Kodangal Plate Div-1

K. Satheesh-groomed Best Buddy gave a speedy display and got rewarded for his consistency in the Kodangal Plate (Div-I), a sprint event for horses in the highest class. The six-year old gelding, with apprentice Ekram Alam in the saddle, went surging ahead as the gates flew open while a couple of pretenders gave an impression of chasing him in earnest. Best Buddy appeared to be coasting home to victory when he hung out badly and conceded the lead to Ashoka and Malaala, who essayed their challenge from the inner rails. Just when it appeared that he was going to taste defeat, Ekram steadied Best Buddy (Planetaire – Change Tack) and powered him for a renewed effort. Best Buddy's final surge overwhelmed both Ashoka and Malaala. Meanwhile, PS Kaviraj-ridden longshot  Faith, who was the last one to enter the straight, unleashed a brilliant run to catch up with Best Buddy but found the winning post coming a stride too soon. Faith was a neck shy of the winner and had to settle for the second place. Ashoka and Malaala were in close tow in that order.

The withdrawal of Beauty Blaze in the lower division of the Kodangal Plate paved the way for Black Onyx's success. G. Vivek-piloted Black Onyx lay unconcerned in the mid-bunch as City of Bliss showed the way to the field. Magan Singh Parmar-trained Black Onyx (Stardan - Dancing Dame) improved steadily to come within striking distance of the leaders after the field straightened for home and accelerated well to wear down City of Bliss in the last furlong. Nugget warmed up late to her task and put her neck ahead of City of Bliss to take the runner-up slot. Miss Little Angel ran fourth. Most of the runners in both events were more or less happy to let the victors steal the show.

Vivek had earlier steered favourite Mireya to her fourth straight success in the Huzurnagar Plate (Div-I). Pinatubo seized the initiative at start and was still in command when the field was homeward bound. Vivek switched lanes to launch his assault from the outer lane and set Mireya alight. G. Sandeep-nursed Mireya (Planetaire - Win And Enjoy) came with a rattle to overhaul Pinatubo in the last half furlong to once again land the spoils for her connections in taking style. Late-finishing D Yes Boss ended second ahead of Pinatubo.

Rank outsider Top In Class claimed the Huzurnagar Plate (Div-II) in a tantalising three-way finish. SS Faisal Hassan-groomed Top In Class was nowhere in the picture when Garnet had led all the way and almost showed a clear pair of heels  to his rivals. However, Top In Class (Top Class - Bella) set the track ablaze with a stunning gallop when given his head by jockey Surya Prakash and came flying to snatch victory on the post. Shortly before Top In Class made his presence felt, Mark My Day had improved steadily and looked poised to topple Garnet. Top In Class, Mark My Day and Garnet were separated by a head each at the wire. Thunderstruck ended fourth ahead of favourite Tripurari, who refused to put his best foot forward.

The piping-hot favourite Minecraft gave no anxious moments to the moneybags and registered a swift encore in the hands of Ashhad Asbar. B. Mukesh Kumar-trained Minecraft (Gusto - Gossip) stayed behind Ambitious Star and Shadow Fax till the heads turned for home where Asbar reminded him of his task ahead. Minecraft uncoiled a terrific run as he cruised past the front-running duo to record his second effortless win. Top-weighted Minecraft had something reserve when being eased up close home. Shadow Fax, Ambitious Star and Planet Super ended in that order behind the winner.

Decoy from D. Netto's stables justified the inspired support he received in the opening event to provide a positive start to the punters. Racing in the mid-pack as his stable-mate La Mirage divested First Class of her lead about two furlongs from the gates, BR Kumar-steered Decoy made rapid progress as the eight-horse field swung into the home stretch. The bay son of Smuggler's Cove out of Szable soon collared La Mirage about a furlong still left for the wire and simply cantered home for his third career success. Runner-up Rising Tycoon progressed well in the closing stages of the seven-furlong event but found the winner beyond his reach. La Mirage finished in the money ahead of First Class.

Later in the day, Neelesh Rawal's ward Bold Beauty too garnered maximum support in the betting ring as the odds against ante post favourite drifted out. Running true to the market expectations, Bold Beauty (Sanus Per Aquam - Celestrella) raised a fluent gallop after NB Kuldeep  brought her into contention as the heads turned for home. Meanwhile, Eminency had tackled leader Pancho and was being hailed as a winner close home before Bold Beauty flashed on to the scene. Eminency knuckled under after a brief tussle allowing Bold Beauty to leave the maiden ranks. Favourite Diamond Rain gave disappointing show once again when finishing a tame third ahead of Assured Success.

Bottom-weighted Blue Brigade ran the best race of her career to earn her corn bill in the last race. Seven-year old Blue Brigade was the fastest moving horse in the straight as apprentice Kuldeep Singh applied pressure and brought him from way off the pace. The S. Sreekant trainee wore down Exeter, who had a sizeable lead when turning for home, in the final moments of the sprint. Lights On finished third ahead of Riffa.
