CHOPIN TRUMPS MOJITO IN KARL UMRIGAR TROPHY

By Usman Rangila | 18 Jan 2024 | MUMBAI

Mr S M Ruia and trainer P Shroff leading Chopin (Neeraj Rawal up), winner of The Karl Umrigar Trophy

Success for the Pesi Shroff-nurtured sparingly-raced six-year old Chopin had been few and far between as such he was lesser fancied than Mojito, who possessed solid credentials in the four-horse field. However, a rousing performance when it mattered most enabled Chopin to triumph in the Karl Umtigar Trophy here on Thursday.

As the start was given, Neeraj Rawal sent Chopin in pursuit of Coeur De Lion with Mojito and Flying Visit following them. Chopin drew alongside Coeur De Lion as they took the final turn and slipped into the lead when the field straightened for home. Nikhil Parmar soon switched gears on Mojito and threw a challenge at Chopin. At one stage, in the last furlong of the mile event, Mojito drew level with his rival but Chopin (Ampere - Northern Melody) dug into his reserve on Neeraj's call and lunged forth to hit the wire giving Shroff the privilege of saddling the winner in the event framed in the memory of his late brother-in-law, Karl Umrigar. Chopin ended up a proverbial whisker ahead of Mojito. Coeur De Lion and Flying Visit followed them home.

Soon afterwards, Neeraj steered Chopin's owner-mate Geographique to victory in the Radha Sigtia Trophy, a coveted one for its owner, Mr Shyam Ruia. Trevor Patel took Wall Street on a pillar-to-post mission with Geographique close behind and within striking distance of the leader. Both Magneto and Regal Command were ridden off the pace and raced in the rear. Imtiaz Sait-nursed Geographique (Golden Horn - Island Dreams) easily tackled Wall Street as the field moved towards the home stretch and went smoothly into the lead. Neeraj kept Geographique going for a comfortable win over Magneto, who warmed up close home only to shorten the margin of defeat. Regal Command finished third ahead of Wall Street, who is yet to justify the handicap rating allotted to him.

Shroff had another winner later in the day when Santissimo made a smashing debut in the Nadia Mary Homi Wadia Trophy (Div-II). The speedy on-money favourite Fast Approach went straight down to business as the field of seven took off for five-furlong scurry and was chased by Windborne, Touch of Gold and Star Impact. On entering the final stretch, Santissimo (Gusto - Beldon Hill), who raced in fifth position, was pulled out by Trevor and pressed into action. The bay colt unleashed a superb run to catch up with Fast Approach in the last half furlong and then cruised past him. Neeraj's hat-trick bid was thus crushed and Fast Approach had to settle for the second spot. Touch of Gold and Star Impact took the other two minor places on the judge's frame.

Unlike his stable-mate Fast Approach, Redouble was neglected in the betting ring but that couldn't prevent him from alleviating his master Sanjay Kolse's pain. SJ Sunil-partnered Redouble (Akeed Champion - Hedwig) fetched the Nadia Mary Homi Wadia Trophy (Div-I) for his master by tackling Dazzling Duchess in the final run-in and later keeping Villanelle at bay. Dazzling Duchess retained the third place, a neck ahead of Baklava. Shroff-saddled Mumtaz went into.the race as the favourite after the withdrawal of Raise The Stakes but she was slow at the start and finished sixth.

Malesh Narredu-groomed filly New Dimension defied the stiff penalty incurred for her previous success and registered an encore by claiming the Maharaja Sir Pratapsingh Gaekwad Trophy. New Dimension (Multidimensional - Victoria Falls) lacked initial speed but improved steadily to be close enough to pounce upon no-hopers Esperanza and Majestic Warrior, who brought the field into straight. When Yash Narredu asked her for an effort, New Dimension stepped up her pace to overhaul the leaders over a furlong away from the wire and was home and dry before runner-up Misty could mar her winning prospects. Misty played the role of a bridesmaid once again and finished ahead of Empower and Nelson River, who ran on figure on the judge's board. Superimpose was prominent in the fray till New Dimension went ahead but fell back after failing to get a clear passage and was also unable to raise a fluent gallop.

With the right money riding on his back, Ultimo from SK SK Sunderji's stables found his mark in the day's last race. Ultimo (Surfrider - Honey Dew) initially raced on the haunches of Lord Fenicia for the first two furlongs and not relishing the slow pace took control of the running. S. Saqlain just kept Ultimo focused on his task ahead and romped home for an easy win over Koening. Treasure Gold finished on to be third ahead of the unextended Over The Line, the winner's barn-mate.

Trainer SS Shah's labour of love in training Gimme got rewarded when the five-year old bay recorded his second career success this season. Entrusted to appreciate MS Jodha on this occasion, Gimme (Air Support - Optimal) raced behind leaders Lightning Blaze and Juliana till the field entered the home stretch. Juliana tried to snatch the lead while Silver Steps and Gimme both made their move at the same juncture. However, Deora drove Gimme vigorously to gain the upper hand and scored a narrow win over joint favourite Goldiva, who lost precious ground at the gates yet again. The Trevor-ridden mare did well to recover the lost ground and threaten Gimme but in vain. Well-fancied Silver Steps ended a tame and faraway third with Marlboro in close tow.
