The call to `Save Kunigal’ generated big buzz among the locals and in the racing circles. More than 3000 people including hundreds of animal lovers, Politicians, activists and environmentalists hit the road in Kunigal, protesting against the government proposal to develop integrated township on the heritage Kunigal Stud Farm spread over 421 acres.  The protestors made no secret of their opinion that  they are totally against the government proposal and the “Save Kunigal’ movement will only get bigger in the months ahead . In addition the leaders of the leading  local groups disclosed that they have decided to seek legal recourse through Public Interest Litigation (PIL) if the government decides to stick  to the integrate township plan.

Rajesh Gowda, Vice President (BJP) Tumkuru, revealed  that the local sentiment for the farm, where the legendary Mysore King Tippu Sultan bred his horses for his cavalry to fight the British is very strong. “It is true that Kunigal Stud Farm (KSF) has put this small town on the international map ,” said Rajesh Gowda adding that more than 500 acres of land is available close to the farm and the government can build township without shutting down the heritage farm.

Former MLA Ramaswamy Gowda declared that the decision of the government to recall the tender is unfair and the farm which is one of the best in country, consistently producing champion race horses should be retained. “You need to chop down more than 200-300 centuries old rare trees, which is just not done,” thundered Ramaswamy Gowda revealing that the local people understand the plans and designs of some of the influential people, who are lobbying strongly in the corridors of powers for the integrated township. “We will not allow the land sharks to grab the heritage site. The protest today is only a trailer of the big picture, said Gowda.

Mukhyamantri Chandru (AAP), Chetan Ahimsa (activist), Vijay Nishanth (Tree doctor), Kunigal Bar Association president, Putte Gowda and BT Lalitha Nayak were a few others who participated in the big rally, sending out a strong message that the government will not be allowed to succeed in their endeavour to bring down a heritage site.

A source from the Urban Development Department disclosed that the integrated township proposal has not gained movement following sporadic protests and the fact that it is fast becoming a big local issue before the Lok Sabha elections.

KSF Managing Director Zeyn Mirza pleased with the genuine support to the farm said: “It is one the best stud farms in the country and the racing industry will be hit hard if the farm is forced to shut shop. In the interest of the sport, the  government need to retain this historic farm,” said Zeyn.

Well the Kunigal Chalo call and Save Kunigal rallies have generated maximum interest  in the racing circles and more importantly in the town, which houses the heritage farm and the Karnataka people are ready to do battle to save the farm.
