GUTSY JAMARI WEARS WINFAIR247 DERBY SASH

By Ikram Khan | 26 Jan 2024 | BANGALORE

Mr & Mrs K N Dhunjibhoy, Mr Rama Seshu Eyunni leading Jamari (P Trevor Up), winner of The Winfair247 Bangalore Derby (Gr.1)

She looked set to win her second Derby at this centre and record a hat-trick of classic wins this season. She looked much superior than her nine rivals including the three colts and the half-dozen fillies pitted against her in the blue riband of the season, the Winfare247 Winter Derby. And more importantly she looked good in the paddock before going out to accomplish the big mission on Republic Day. All eyes were on Jamari and her pilot Trevor Patel and the big crowd on the big day wanted the Queen to continue her rule at a centre she loved and cherished. They knew that the Queen had never lost a big battle here and they were confident that the gutsy ruler again would successfully lower her sword on all her nine rivals in the big showdown.  Jamari did just that to the delight of the 12,000 railbirds, who filled the stands to watch her and her partner Trevor parade their skills and the two champions made champion trainer Pesi Shroff and the owners proud, Jamari maintaining her classic streak, while galloping home to wear another Derby sash.

It was not as easy as the Summer Derby success. Trevor needed to stretch every sinew and Jamari too was required to dig deep into her reserves to hang on and peg back the bold challenge of Madam Rich, who posed a definite threat in the hands of young Saqlain in her effort to topple the top fancy. The champion filly gained the day in record time (2:28.2) , bettering the existing mark (2:28.85) registered by Temerity seven years ago (2017). Temerity incidentally was also trained by Pesi Shroff. The top effort fetched her owners a rich purse of 1.1 crore and the winning camp immensely pleased with the exploits of the Queen lauded the effort of Trevor, who produced his best on the D-day recording a treble including his ride to glory on Jamari.

To the credit of Prithviraj, it must be mentioned that he knew that his filly Madam Rich had the class and potential to compete with Jamari and at the draw of lots, Prithviraj stuck his neck out and said that if Madam Rich stays the mile-and-half Derby journey, she will give Jamari a scare. And that's exactly what happened and that really provided the thrill in the climax. Pesi Shroff immensely pleased with another champagne effort from the top filly disclosed that Jamari loves the track and the climatic conditions at Bengaluru and that's the reason they decided to race her here and she rewarded  the decision recording the classic hat-trick in record time.

While Madam Rich went back, head held high after her stupendous showing, Tehani from Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard  piloted by Suraj Narredu failed to improve on her Oaks effort and in fact performed much below her capacity, finishing a poor fourth behind Prana. But all said and done it was a Jamari show and the Queen gallantly fought to deny the rich purse to the `Rich Madam' in what proved to be a `Ladies Day Out' at BTC on Republic Day.

Trevor, who hogged the limelight, earlier booted home the second in demand at the betting ring, Tripitaka from Irfan Ghatala's ward in the Indian Republic Trophy and later drove home the overwhelming favourite Sofiya to a smart victory, snuffing out the challenge of Aquamatic in convincing fashion in the TB Hanumantharaj Memorial Trophy run over a distance of seven furlongs.

Champion trainer Prasanna Kumar continued his blazing run with his juveniles, the well-backed Masato making a smashing debut in the Mysore Race Club Trophy. The winner piloted by Imran Chisty donkey-licked his six rivals without really raising a sweat and on the strength of this performance is set to provide an encore. Stablemate Storm Shadow gained the runner-up berth sending out a strong message that Prasanna's merry dance with his juveniles will continue all through this winter.Prasanna earlier led in Royal Mysore, another public choice, who produced a sublime performance to record his second straight success in the Vidhana Soudha Cup run over a mile. Royal Mysore is on top of his game and it will come as a big disappointment if this talented Prasanna trainee does not complete a hat-trick of wins, when saddled next.

The lesser fancied Lone Ranger piloted by Antony Raj came up tops in the opening event, the lower division of the Totalizator Cup, while the strongly fancied Blackstome from the stables of MR Singh came good in the upper division. Apollo Light was one other who entered the winners' circle edging out Princess Jasmine by the shortest of margins in the upper division of the Saddle Up Cup run over a sprint. Full marks to apprentice jockey Koshi Kumar for keeping his cool and aggressively driving out the Prithviraj ward, who at one stage was beaten by Princess Jasmine before fighting hard to turn the tables at the shadow of the winning post.
