By Ikram Khan | 11 Feb 2024 | CHENNAI

Trainer J Sebastian leading Bluemed (R N Darshan up), winner of The Alphabet Million

Form played true and most fancied runners displayed their true potential while entering the winners' circle to the delight of the followers of form, who made a killing, five firm favourites and two well supported second choices coming through in the competitive eight-event card on Sunday.

The plum event, the Alphabet Million was claimed by the second in demand at the betting ring Bluemed from Sebastian's yard. The winner and the runner-up Go For The Moon from Vijay Singh's yard, who was the top fancy were locked in a ding-dong battle for most part of the final two furlongs before the Sebastian ward gained the day close home. While Darshan piloted Bluemed after Imran Chisty was unseated on Rubert in the previous race, G Vivek was roped in to guide the fortunes of Go For The Moon, the Englisman Fanny Norton unseated, while partnering the favourite Loch Lomond in the V M Gopal Memorial Trophy. Apprentice jockey Inayat on Romualdo and Farid Ansari astride Hallucinate also were dislodged from their respective mounts in a bad mishap, but as luck would have it, all four escaped unhurt in what appeared a bad mix-up and a worse jumble and tumble.

The four to one shot Tycoonist from Vijay Singh's yard came up tops in the event run over a distance of seven furlongs. The Deepesh Narredu schooled Hawk Of The Wind piloted by Bhaskar shifted in a trifle before negotiating the final curve resulting in the fall of Loch Lomond and the horses coming from behind suffered from the lapse and soon four jockeys were down and it looked bad before the medical team at Guindy announced that the jockeys had escaped injury and were kept under observation. Well Tycoonist who had stolen a march at the top of the straight hung on gamely to score from Sweet Fragrance, while Hawk Of The Wind finished third. A stewards enquiry was conducted soon after the event and after a long deliberation the stipes and stewards chose not to alter the result.

Sebastian after leading in Bluemed and Element  recorded a treble, leading in the favourite Larado in the concluding event, the Salisbury Handicap run over a distance of nine furlongs. The winner was confidently piloted by apprentice Peter who chose to play the waiting game before timing his final challenge to a nicety. Night Jar gained the runner-up berth ahead of Three Of A Kind, while the other well fancied runner, Queen Of Fame found the going tough and finished a poor fourth.

The two divisions of the Bright Hanovar Handicap went in favour of the punters, the two overwhelming favourites, Smiles Of Fortune coming up tops in the upper division, while Element, one of the three winners from Sebastian's yard proving too good in the lower division. Looking a picture of fitness at the paddock, the topweighted Element was strongly supported in the hands of Imran Chisty and the public rage cantered home to register an emphatic win. Cloud Jumper finished second ahead of the five to one shot Annalisa piloted by G Vivek, while Young Heart completed the frame.

The talented Smiles Of Fortune provided Yash Narredu an arm-chair ride to success in the upper division. The winner hit the front soon after the nine contestants came under the starter's flag for the seven furlongs journey and simply kept going away from the others, finishing a distance clear at the post. Desert Star who fancied his chances against the winner found the winner too hot to handle, while Jahzara too seemed flat-footed in a race which simply was dominated by a horse who will score again in the higher class.

Trainer Suraj Shaw led in the first two winners of the day. Seeking The Stars piloted by Vivek won the upper division of the Prince Khartoum Plate, while Magical Wave provided the duo a double, coming up trumps in the lower division. Both Seeking The Stars and Magical Wave appear in good nick and it will pay to again support the two when next saddled.

The Ramanathan schooled Radiant Joy was the lone unfancied runner to enter the winners' circle, the 20 to one long shot recording a shock victory in the Mystical Handicap run over a mile. The favourite Windsor Walk and the second top fancy Beautiful were locked in a grim duel approaching the distance post and just when the Suresh-trained favourite seized the initiative, Vikram astride Radiant Joy packed punch and the rankoutsider responding gamely to his master's call powered through to score in convincing fashion.
