The big cricket bash at the Bangalore Turf Club proved to be a big success taking into account that the first two knock-out games ended in a close contest before the Jockeys XI defeated the Trainers/Owners side in the final by a convincing margin of 11 runs. The Jockeys in fact were lucky to make the final, sneaking in through the back door after the gutsy Club Members side had them reeling at 16/4 at one stage before letting them score a 50 plus score in the eight overs a side contest. The Club members in the run chase again called the shots and with Sameer Gurjar in good nick were cruising home nice and easy before Sameer's unfortunate run out and a couple of needless bold shots at the end costed the Members dear, the Jockeys holding their nerve in the final over to make it to the final.
"We called the shots and had the Jockeys on the mat in the first dozen overs of the 16 overs contest. The fact that we failed to provide the finishing touches in the end was really disappointing," said Members XI skipper Nikhil Yathiraj, who provided the perfect platform claiming four wickets. It was clear that the performance of a couple of Members team players with both bad and ball was much superior, but they just the lacked ability to close out the contest.
After the wake-up call against the Members, the Jockeys XI, it must be mentioned adopted a more sensible approach in the final and backed by two stellar efforts from the openers, Chetan Kalay and Naveen posted a match winning total of 79/5 in their allotted 10 overs, which proved good enough to win the championship, the Trainers and Owners finishing 11 runs short of the target. The winners took home a rich pruse of Rs, 50,000, while the runners-up gained a cash award of Rs,30,000. Vinod Reddy from the Trainers and Owners team was adjudged the man of the tournament.
BTC organising committee chairman, Dayanand Mandre disclosed that the annual big bash again generated good excitement among the racing professionals and the club members. "The fact that this year we had a fourth team in the championship proved that the cricket bash is popular. The BTC staff made their debut this year and they played well and made their presence felt," said Dayanand.
The managing committee of the club while lauding the effort of all the four teams revealed that they will continue to support this championship in the years ahead taking into account that it provides a good break for the pros and a fine opportunity for all the members of the club to meet and on this day.
