SMILES OF FORTUNE WINS AIR FORCE TROPHY

By Ikram Khan | 23 Feb 2024 | CHENNAI

On a day form played true and most fancied contestants chose to put the best stride forward to enter the winners' circle, the public rage Smiles Of Fortune from Deepesh Narredu's yard chalked out his second straight success, winning the Air Force Trophy, the plum event in resplendent style. Yash took the miserly quoted short-priced  favourite (30/100), to the front soon after the eight runners came under the starter's flag for the sprint trip and without really raising a sweat, Smiles Of Fortune never let the initiative slip romping home a deserving winner. Romualdo from Sebastian's yard followed the winner home, while Groovin fancied strongly in place by the insiders and right connections did well to finish third to the delight of his supporters. Smiles Of Fortune, it is needless to mention is on top of his game and is set to record a hat-trick if his connections choose to race him again before the curtain is brought down at the end of this month.

Second in demand at the betting ring, Mutant from B Suresh's yard proved too good in the opening event, the Army Trophy run over 1100 metres comfortably snuffing out the belated effort of the public choice Diamonds And Pearls partnered by Peter. The winner piloted by Hindu Singh stole a march approaching the distance post and hung on gamely to score in convincing fashion. Danny's Girl finished third ahead of Excellent Star, who was never really in the hunt and will be the one to follow in the forthcoming Udhagamandalam season.

The James McKeown schooled Samurai Blue who violently shifted out in his last effort opened the favourite in the Navy Cup before ,money came pouring in on the Sebastian-trained Desert Star piloted by Imran Chisty. The overwhelming favourite found the speedy James ward too hot to handle and had to rest content with the runner-up berth. Queen Anula finished a creditable third and is one for the notebook, while Aurora Borealis completed the frame.

A model of consistency, Three Of A Kind from Ajith Kumar''s yard was fancied most in the Tamilnadu Racehorse Owners Association Cup and the  public choice in the hands of promising apprentice Ram Nandan Manjhi made every post a winning one to the delight of the followers of form. Autumn Shower caught the eye while finishing a good second ahead of Rwanda.

The well supported second choice Knotty One from Ramanathan's yard piloted in determined fashion by the talented Vivek G proved too good in the OTA Trophy for juveniles run over a distance of seven furlongs. This Is Gold from Deepesh Narredu's yard on the strength of her smart debut victory garnered the maximum support, but the public choice failed to reproduce her smashing maiden effort and to the disappointment of her supporters finished a tame third  behind the smart winner Knotty One, who posted his second straight victory despite shifting out badly in the straight. Knotty One next will be campaigned in the Ooty classics and his progress is certain to evoke interest.

The six to one shot Cloud Jumper was the lone outsider to score in the six-event card, coming up tops in the Police Trophy run over a distance of seven furlongs. The winner piloted in copy book fashion by Alex Rozario hit the front soon after the 11 contestants negotiated the final furlong and gallantly held onto the advantage gained to the delight of the Suraj Shaw camp. Despacito followed the winner home ahead of Wisaka, while all that the favourite Reign Of Terror did was take a lot of good money down the drain.
