Trainer Azhar Ali (Deputizing trainer S S Attaollahi) leading West Brook (Akshay Kumar Up), winner of The Sir Charles Todhunter Memorial Trophy

On a day a couple of rank outsiders, Three Little Words from Faraz Arshad’s  yard  and Super Marvella from the stables of Neil Devaney stunned the followers of form, the Sulaiman Attaollahi schooled West Brook finally registered his second career victory after a number of failed attempts in classics and a couple of major plums all over the country.

Competing in the Sir Charles Todhunter Memorial Trophy, West Brook looked head and shoulders above her six rivals taking into account that the talented filly had matched strides with the highest rated horses in her effort to join the elite classic league. But the bookmakers thought it otherwise. They reckoned that the form of the filly was fast slipping down, while most knowledgeable were of the opinion that the filly was sporting a winter coat. This led to the price going up and up in the bookmakers’ ring, West Brook after opening at (14/10) offered at (9/4) before she was hammered down to (6/4), the followers of form confidently supporting her to get the measure of her half-dozen moderate  rivals.

Well the public choice did that to the delight of the railbirds, but the fact is that West Brook didn’t have it easy and the leading pro Akshay Kumar had to stretch every sinew to snuff out the challenge of the second in demand at the betting ring Victoria Doresaani close home to gain the solitary length success. Crosswater from Arjun Manglorkar’s yard was seen finishing on fastest at end to finish a creditable third and is one for the notebook.

Sienna Princes was backed to the exclusion of her seven rivals in the lower division of the Sarb-Kla Plate for juveniles. The top fancy from Warren Singh’s yard piloted by AR Pradeep looked set to score before the 15 to one shot Three Little Words in the hands of Ryan produced an astounding gallop to spoil the party of the 'Princess’ much to the chagrin of her supporters who had strongly backed the filly. Arjun Manglorkar-trained Habibti finished third ahead of Days Date.

No takers at (12/1), Super Marvella from Neil Devaney’s yard hit the front in the Manikyadhara Falls Plate run over a mile and stayed there right till the very end. On the strength of his satisfactory and suggestive effort in his last start, second behind Aldila, Vyasa from Darius Byramji’s yard was fancied most, but all that the public choice do was take a lot of good money down the drain, failing to make the board  much to the disappointment of his supporters. Norwegian Wood followed the winner home, while Serai surprised most finishing third ahead of Nevada Gold and Sincerity, both fancied strongly in place.

In the upper division of the Souparnika Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs, Lex Luthor from the stables of Kishan Thomas was a medium of a good gamble, the well backed Kishan ward in the hands of in-form pro Antony Raj justifying the confidence of his camp to romp home a deserving winner.Ombudsman finished second ahead of Osiris, while the demoted Lauterbrunnen raced in patches, Rajesh Kumar astride the topweight from Narayan Gowda’s yard content to leisurely finish fifth.

The lower division of the event was claimed by the second in demand at the betting ring, Sekhmet , another from Kishan Thomas’ yard who proved too good for his eight rivals, putting the race to bed much before the final furlong.  The favourite Eco Friendly gained the runner-up berth ahead of Mega Success, while Antilope who found support from the right quarters after calling the shots for most part of the seven furlongs trip retired at the top of the straight.

The public rage La McQueen from Arjun Manglorkar’s yard and the in-form Aquamatic from Azhar Ali’s yard were the two other winners. The former shed his status in the upper division of the Sarb-Kla Plate, while Aquamatic pegged back the strong challenge of the favourite Stormy Ocean in the Koppal Plate run over a mile.
