AMAZONIA WINS MRC TROPHY

Trainer Deepesh Narredu leading Amazonia (Hindu Singh up), winner of The Madras Race Club Trophy

After making a good start to the season on the opening day, most big bettors lost out big on Sunday, only two favourites Amazonia and Dear Lady justifying favouritism, while four top fancies and strongly backed public choices bit the dust much to the chagrin of the followers of form, who punted big in belief that form will play true in the opening week.

The eight to one shot Air Marshall from Ajith Kumar's yard set the trend, coming up tops in the opening event, the Moyar Handicap run over a sprint. The winner piloted by Baskar produced a neat effort to push the followers of form back against the wall, the well backed public choice Autumn Shower from Uthaiah's yard failing to even save money in place and the second in demand at the betting ring, Ashwa Dev finishing third behind the runner-up Authentic Bell, who appears in good nick and is set to earn her cornbill in the weeks ahead.

The Vijay Singh-trained Grace dropped the biggest bombshell reigning supreme in the Admiration Handicap run over a sprint. The 20 to one long shot much to the frustration of all the big on-money punters beat the short-priced favourite This Is Gold from Deepesh Narredu's yard and the lesser fancied Seattle Blue who was touted a good win and place proposition from B Suresh's camp. Seattle Blue finished third and that helped her supporters finish evens-stevens, while the loss of This Is Gold hit the big punters hard.

The top fancy Amazonia back after her brief stint at Mumbai brought the smile back on the face of Deepesh, winning the Madras Race Club Trophy in convincing fashion from the second choice in the event, Knotty Dancer from the stables of Ramanathan. The overwhelming favourite partnered by Hindu Singh looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring before she proved her mettle against her eight rivals. Wind Symbol in this event was withdrawn before the nine-horse field came under the starter's flag for the sprint event. Race For The Stars did well to finish third ahead of Slainte, who appears to have lost form and it will do a world of good if you choose to ignore her till she shows some spark in the morning trials.

The overwhelming favourite Crown Angel from Suresh's yard and Luca from the stables of James McKeown were withdrawn before the relatively small field of five runners came under the starter's flag for the Kingman Plate run over a distance of 1300 metres. Grey Wind it was who finally topped the betting board, but failed in his mission to beat the lesser fancied Arjun from Sebastian's yard. King's Battalion was fancied strongly in place and he was lucky to finish in the money, thanks to the withdrawal of Crown Angel and Luca.
