Water Wood appeared to have clear cut supremacy to win the 1200 metres Hemavathy Cup, a sprint race for horses rated 40 and above, that featured the races on Saturday. But with a couple of other runners too getting strong support in the ring, notably Supreme Power who has always failed as a fancied runner, the odds on the Satish Narredu trained Water Wood were quite tempting. In the event, jockey Appu who had Water Wood in front from the word `go’ and had no problem in winning without coming under pressure from any of the runners. Alla Famiglia who had faltered as a favourite in the lower class has since picked form and was an impressive second ahead of Soviet Bay. Water Wood hit the front as the field jostled to take position at the start. With Gem shifting in sharply from the outside draw and the ones on the inside trying to squeeze out the others, there was a bit of jostling on the inside, causing several runners to lose position. Water Wood was chased by Gem and Alla Famiglia but the former who had struck great form, found the weight a stopper as he faded out of reckoning on turning for home. Water Wood kicked on to win comfortably. Supreme Power finished late taking the fourth spot. Jockey Pradeep Chauhan has been suspended for two race days for careless riding on Gem. Trainer Irfan Ghatala kept his record intact as two of his wards who went as overwhelming favourites failed to oblige. First, Lyricist went into the race as an on-money favourite but apprentice jockey Paswan kept his mount too far behind the front-running Janasheen so much so that he was a lost cause at the final bend itself. Then there was inspired support for Flightingale who was backed to the exclusion of her rivals in the 2200 metres S M Shivaji Rao Memorial Plate but the filly was never in contention and finished a poor fourth. Michael Eshwer trained Perfect Mover bolted in to win as she pleased from Boat of Garten and Bajo Grande. One of the senior most Stewards in the Bangalore Turf Club is of the opinion that Silva Storai is an incompetent jockey notwithstanding her success in the Derbys and her wins are more in the nature of flukes than due to any significant effort on the part of the jockey and as such, blaming her for defeats is uncalled for! Perhaps a statutory warning of this nature would do race goers a world of good. Both the divisions of the Glass House Cup went the way of Darashah trained horses. The Peak made a profitable start to finish mission in the upper division and won quite competently from Green Bax. Favourite Psychic Strength, who went into the race with great hype about him, was never in with a chance, finishing a poor third. In the lower division, jockey Anthony Whelan ran into all sorts of problems, getting boxed for a clear run as he failed to take an advantageous position early on and he had to struggle hard to record a narrow win over Native American. Had he lost the race, he would have surely got into trouble with the authorities. Trainer Padmanabhan broke his lean spell with a double, winning the day’s opener and concluding race of the day. Ministry of Sound beat the meek opposition pointless. Jockey Chisty took it easy on Mazeppa and despite the long suspension that he has had early in the season, he has not learnt his lessons. He is trying his luck too often. Mystic Heights won the mile race with a start to finish dash and easily staved off the challenge of Chant Royal and Baracudda.
