GREY WIND WINS NILGIRIS 1000 GUINEAS

The first classic of the Udhagamandalam season, which has not gone kindly for the followers of form, produced a shock result,  15 to one long shot Grey Wind from Deepesh Narredu's yard upsetting the applecart of the on-money favourite Gold Ride from the stables of James McKeown. In line for a hat-trick, Gold Ride after her two facile victories was touted as a `moral certainty' to record her first classic success, but the daughter of Win Legend found the winner and the runner-up, This Is Gold, stablemate of Grey Wind, too hot to handle and much to the chagrin of her followers finished a tame third. The grey piloted in copybook fashion by Hindu Singh tracked the two leaders, Light The World and All Stars for most part of the seven furlongs classic trip before Hindu Singh packed punch on the strongly built Deepesh trainee approaching the straight and  the rankoutsider responding in fine style streaked ahead and put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong to the delight of Deepesh Narredu camp. Deepesh was most pleased following the 1-2 result, This Is Gold finishing on fastest at end to deny the public choice Gold Ride the runner-up berth. It is clear that Grey Wind has made good improvement after her Guindy stint, while Gold Ride failed to maintain the form she displayed while chalking out two straight wins from as many starts before losing out in her fist classic test.

After finishing third behind stablemate Light The World in her debut, the judiciously prepared Vinalia from trainer Vijay Singh's yard was strongly supported to shed her maiden status in the Urban Sea Cup run over a sprint and she did just that, showing a clean pair of heels to her five rivals while romping home without really being extended by a margin of four lengths. Vinalia appears to be a goodtype of a filly and more will be heard of this Vijay Singh trainee in the weeks ahead. The friendless Seiko Katsu from Mandanna's yard followed the winner home ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring Royal Chivalry.

Third behind the winner Supreme Grandeur last week, Spirit Of Rose from trainer Suraj Shaw's yard was surprisingly offered at (5/1), money pouring in on the favourite Impiana, another McKeown ward who failed to justify favouritism. The winner with a suggestive run under her belt looked in fine shape at the paddock parade before she cruised home nice and easy in the hands of Alex Rozario. The lesser fancied Seeking The Stars finished a creditable second and it will pay to keep an eye on this stablemate of the winner in the weeks ahead. Impiana partnered by Umesh was never in the hunt and it is best to ignore this mare until she shows some spark in her next couple of races on this tricky track.

The seven to one shot Glorious Evensong from Sebastian's yard proved too good in the concluding event, the Catherine Falls Handicap run over a distance of 1500 metres. The winner produced a sparkling gallop after negotiating the final curve to edge out the public choice Abilitare close home. Gingersnap finished a creditable third and is one for the notebook.

Earlier, the strongly backed Samurai Blue from McKeown's yard justified the confidence of his supporters powering home in the hands of Soufyane Moulin to score in the opening event, the Mystic Memory Handicap run over a distance of six furlongs. The winner on the strength of this impressive effort is set to win again in the higher class. Despacito caught the eye while gaining the runner-up berth and it will not be long before this Uthaiah ward earns her cornbill. Touch Of Fury saved money in place while Knotty Power after raising hopes early in the six furlongs event shot her bolt and failed to even make the frame.
