SUMMER SONG MAKES SMASHING DEBUT

S Ganapathy and Trainer K S Mandanna leading Summer Song (Dharshan Antony B up), winner of The Nilgiris Collector's Cup

Form played traunt yet again and most favourites took a back seat. Yesterday a solitary favourite King's Battalion justified his rating and ranking on Sunday, only two public choices, Ugly Truth and Brilliant Lady entered the winners' circle, while five lesser fancied contestants stunned the railbirds resulting in bookmakers with a spring in their stride and a smile on their face sprinting to the bank.

The well-backed even-money favourite Ugly Truth from Suraj Shaw's yard piloted by leading saddle artiste Umesh was fancied most in the opener, the Upper Bhavani Handicap run over a sprint. The topweighted contestant who had caught the eye while finishing a game second behind  Blue Eyed Boy in his last essay was strongly fancied taking into account that Blue Eyed Boy chalked out his second straight success on Saturday. Umesh sent the winner ahead after the first furlong and the Suraj Shaw ward dominated the scurry, showing a clean pair of heels to his nine rivals in emphatic fashion. Autumn Light  from the stables of Uthaiah finished on purposefully at end to gain the runner-up berth and on the strength of this performance is likely to earn her cornbill, when saddled next. Daiyamondo from Fahad Khan's yard was fancied sweetly in place and to the delight of the Fahad camp finished third ahead of Rwanda.

After starting on a winning note, the followers of form thought that this could be their day, pinning their hopes on the favourite Dancing Queen and the second in demand at the betting ring, Gajabo Grande from Parmar's yard. Much to the satisfaction of his supporters Gajabo Grande piloted by S Imran donkey-licked his eight rivals, while Dancing Queen it was clear had lost her `dancing shoes' and only chased the shadow of the winner. Lesser fancied Presto Power finished third ahead of Three Of A Kind and Mystic Zlatan who appears fit and ready to prove his mettle over a mile long trip which suits his style.

On the strength of her impressive second behind Val D'aran on her maiden appearance at the Blue Mountains, the Vijay Singh schooled Aarini was rightly fancied to shed her maiden status in the Nilgiris Collector's Cup run over a distance of six furlongs. But the strongly fancied public choice performed below par and finished a tame third behind the runner-ujp Royal Chivalry. Summer Song, a ten to one shot debutant from Mandanna's yard made every post a winning one in the hands of Dharshan Antony and is set to provide an encore. Royal Chivalry did well to go one-up after finishing third in his last essay and could again go one-up again in his next attempt and enter the winners' circle in the weeks ahead, while Aarini will take a while to earn her winning bracket in the juvenile company at this centre.

Last start winner, Neziah from James McKeown's stable started the favourite in the upper division of the Mishriff Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs, but soon money came pouring in on the Saddam Iqbal schooled Pink Jasmine  partnered by Ashhad Asbar and Pink Jasmine topped the betting board, backed down from (7/2) to (2/1), while Neziah quoted at (16/10) at the start in the end had no takers at (3/1). Sonic Dash from Deepesh Narredu's yard charged out of the gates and led the field for most part of the journey. Pink Jasmine tailed the leader, while Hindu Singh settled Neziah nice and easy in the third spot. Pink Jasmine hit the front at the top pf the straight but failed to match strides with Neziah in the final furlong. The winner proved too good again and is likely to complete a hat-trick of wins, when saddled next.

Tjhe lower division of the event produced a shock result, the eight to one shot Supreme Grandeur from the stables of Robert Foley coming up tops in the hands of Sah Farid Ansari. The well backed Andorra from McKeown's yard again failed to display her true potential and failed to even save money in place. The second choice Ruling Star produced his best but found Supreme Grandeur too hot to handle on this day. This is the second time Andorra has taken a lot of good money down the drain and it will do a world of good if you chose not to support this McKeown trainee in the weeks ahead.

Following the success of long shot Supreme Grandeur, Dark Son, a five to one shot galloped home to the delight of the Sebastian camp in the upper division of the Rahy's Serenade Handicap. The winner guided home by a confident Brisson produced a sparkling gallop at the all-important end to peg back Sensibility and Choice, while the public choice Cynosure was never in the hunt.

After five favourites bit the dust, the Deepesh Narredu-trained Brilliant Lady helped some punters recoup a portion of their losses, producing a winning gallop in the hands of Hindu Singh to come up trumps in the concluding event, the lower division of the Rahy's Serenade Handicap . The manner in which the grey powered home after making her run on the wide outside suggests that this Deepesh ward is in fine nick and it will pay to support her again next time out.
