San Gimminano obliges

San Gimminano (R Marshall up) winner of the Linganamakki Cup being led in by trainer Mr. D Byramji

San Gimminano who had run below par last time out, duly obliged in the 1200 metres Linganamakki Cup which featured a lackluster card of six events that went through on Friday. San Gimminano had all the credentials to win but there was an element of doubt put in the minds of punters as to how the son of Warrshan would fare given the kind of show that he had put up last time out. He was backed down spiritedly and the same mood was reflected by the seriousness with which the jockey rode out the favourite to a convincing win. Despite the presence of San Gimminano, the punters were looking for a winner elsewhere which was reflected by the generous odds quoted on the eventual winner. Ryan Marshall showed urgency when the starter dispatched the field for the six furlong trip to take a striking position. With Onetouch Toomuch moving out to give way for San Gimminano rounding the final bend, the favorite’s path to victory was smooth. San Gimminano won with a measure of comfort from Cybergenic, Madam Marina, Arthi and Onetouch Toomuch who finished almost in a line. Cybergenic, once a rousing performer, has never been the same after he was gelded two years ago after a smashing victory over a sprint at Mysore. Dreams N Fantasies who was backed spiritedly, duly obliged in the Bharachukki Plate (Div I), a race for three-year olds, winning at the expense of late-finishing Amelie. The winner could have been hard-pressed had Amelie picked up momentum earlier than she did. Stride to Victory who had recorded a smashing win at Chennai during the Indian Turf Invitation Cup weekend, hammered the opposition in the lower division. Trainer Samar Singh was one optimist who believed that Stride To Glory could be toppled but his ward Indian Ocean was left to chase the shadow of the favourite. But then Indian Ocean has done enough to warrant support in a less exalted company. Dingle, who ran green, nevertheless showed good improvement from her last run to save place money by finishing third. Persistence always pays but then Warren Singh doesn’t believe in this because if his ward fails to oblige after being fancied, he would wait for eternity for his wards to drop in scale before making another serious attempt. Perhaps he made an exception to No Opposition and he was always at it on this particular horse. After a series of near misses, No Opposition finally obliged at the expense of a late-finishing Maggie Thatcher and Storm Hawk. Baira was ridden to the ground as the jockey pushed him to take a runaway lead and he was surely doing no good to the cause of the horse or for those handfuls who put faith in the horse. Theodora has time and again let down her supporters. The daughter of Diffident, Theodora surely is not going to win when everyone expects her to do so because she is unreliable and lacks ability. In the day’s other action, Mount Titlis just about managed to win from Coalition Force, jockey Appu’s superior handling as against that of Tauseef making a difference to the outcome of the race. Coalition Force ran green and repeatedly went on to Mount Titlis and would have lost the race on objection if he had won. Luckily, everyone was spared the exercise because Mount Titlis managed to win.
