GLORIOUS KING WINS MAY DAY CUP

By Ikram Khan | 04 May 2024 | OOTY

Trainer Deepesh Narredu leading Glorious King (Hindu Singh up), winner of The May Day Cup

The talented Glorious King from Deepesh Narredu's yard made a winning appearance at the Blue Mountains, reigning supreme in the May Day Cup. On the strength of his two straight victories at Guindy, the `King' was strongly fancied to score despite the fact that the Deepesh ward was making a debut on this tricky track, And the public choice readily justified the confidence of his supporters powerring home nice and easy, while suggesting that he is in on top of his game and willing to maintain his winning streak. Hindu Singh produced a copybook effort on the winner, assuming command at the top of the straight before packing punch to peg back the belated effort of  the in-form Queen Anula and the second in demand at the betting ring Multicrown from the stables of B Suresh. The performance of Multicrown finishing less than 2.5 lengths behind Glorious King on Saturday only confirmed that he in his earlier start had failed to display his true potential for more reasons than one and the stipes and stewards rightly suspended Nakhat Singh for his lacklustre effort, which cost the punters dear.

After Glorious King justified favouritism in the May Day Cup, the Saddam Iqbal schooled Alpha Domino piloted by Ashhad Asbar and Gandolfini from James McKeown's yard garnered maximum support in the Danehill Handicap run over a distance of 2000 metres. It was surprising taking into account that the two leaders on the betting board had not performed creditably in their last starts. Alpha Domino over an identical trip last week finished a poor fourth, close to seven lengths behind the winner Cape Wickham and Gandolphini over a mile in his last essay had finished close to 20 lengths behind the winner Truth And Wine who subsequently also failed to justify her ranking. Well in this scenario it is suicidal to pin your hopes on the `Jodi' and the railbirds paid a big price punting on the two false market fancies,  who clearly lacked the form to come good in this event. The eight to one shot Edmund from the stables of Suraj Shaw partnered by MS Deora came up tops, beating Alpha Domino who in his attempt to make every post a winning one lost out in the final furlong. Now that Alpha Domino has shown some spark, the Saddam Iqbal ward  may get into the winners' circle in his next attempt, while Gandolphini who ended the firm favourite at end before finishing down the field should be ignored until he shows some improvement in the weeks ahead.

The Fahad Khan-trained Annalisa was fancied most in the concluding event, the Santa Anita Handicap, but the public choice failed in her attempt to justify her top billing and finished a tame third behind the shock winner Silver Soul and the runner-up Malacca. The winner had no takers at (30/1) in the ring. Malacca who finished second behind Gingersnap in his last effort before gaining the runner-up berth again today could prove third time lucky and it will pay to support this Ramanathan trainee when saddled next.

Earlier, the topweighted The Rebel from Mandanna's yard confidently piloted by Kuldeep Singh shocked the followers of form in the opening event, the Cauvery Handicap run over a sprint. The 10 to one shot upset the applecart of the strongly fancied favourite Midnight Sparkle who was touted as a good bet, but much to the disappointment of her supporters, the Parmar ward met a tartar in The Rebel who proved too good on this day.

Black Label was another Fahad Khan fancied contestant who bit the dust. The public choice competing in the Romantic Warrior Handicap run over a sprint  finished down the field much to the chagrin of the followers of form who supported the Fahad ward on the strength of his fair second behind Ocean Love in his last essay. The Ramanathan schooled  Bomber Jet edged out Stillwater in a close contest, while Knotty Power, another fancied runner, only managed to save money in place.

Leading trainer Sebastian pulled off a good gamble on Emperor Vikram in the Voyage Bubble Plate. The winner piloted by Brisson assumed command approaching the final curve before quickly putting the race to bed in the final furlong. Straordinario followed the smart winner home ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring Pluto from Deepesh Narredu's yard. Emperor Vikram appears in good nick and is set to provide an encore.
