RAIN PLAYS SPOILSPORT AT MRC

By Ikram Khan | 17 Jul 2024 | MYSORE

Rain played spoilsport at the Mysore Race CLUB (MRC) on Wednesday. The Managing Committee of the MRC spearheaded by the chairman Chandre Gowda left no stone unturned in  their endeavour to gain the license on Monday and though it took a while, MRC  In no mood to push the start by a week, the committee and the administrative personnel got cracking and with good support coming from trainers and owners, the Club framed a competitive card of seven events, the next day. The members of the managing committee while gaining the license had obtained the green signal from the government to rope in the bookmakers and soon the next day the committee [provided license to 27 bookmakers to start operations on July 17, Wednesday. The bookmakers too at short notice were willing to operate from their stalls on Wednesday and racing was back after a five-month break at this centre.

Chandre Gowda pleased  with the effort of his committee to put racing back on track disclosed that following Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) gaining license and starting the season on July 13, MRC was confident that they would not be denied and to the delight of the pros and railbirds at their centre, they got the license and more importantly the clearance to operate with the bookies. "Without bookmakers it is just not possible to go through taking into account that punters are not willing to make investments on the tote paying 28 percent GST," said Chandre Gowda adding that the five-month break had hit the owners hard at this centre.

Leading trainer Rakesh while endorsing the view of the chairman said: " it was tough. The owners were finding it hard to pay Basic Maintenance Fee and with no payment bills honoured, the trainers had their backs to the wall and some of the small trainers with limited horses were exploring other opportunities unable to fund the stable expenses with the cloud of uncertainty and only a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel." Rakesh also pointed out that the costs had gone up and the owners not in position to clear the bills had made it clear that the trainers and Club needed to pitch and support the upkeep of the horses till the racing is back on track. "It really was difficult and hopefully it will get better in the weeks ahead," said Rakesh disappointed that rains stopped the resumption on Wednesday.

An official spokesman of the club revealed that following Chandre Gowda's willingness to start the season on Wednesday, the MRC staff had worked overtime to frame the card and the jockeys too were willing and ready to parade their skills on the first day, first show, but a series of thunder showers forced the cancellation. But all credit to MRC, who will be hosting the Champion Of Champions event, the Indian Turf Invitation Cup on the first Sunday of March, next year, for gearing up in double quick time to get the ball rolling.
