Capannelle wins as Gaslight fades out

By Sharan Kumar | 11 Mar 2005 | BANGALORE

Capannelle (Ruzzan up) winner of the Nagarahole Cup being led in by trainer Mr. Dhariwal & Mr. Zeyn Mirza

Jaggy Dhariwal trained Capannelle is a moody customer. When he is in a mood to gallop, he can beat them all as he showed in the 1400 metres Nagarhole Cup, a race for horses rated 40 and above that featured Friday’s races. While Capannelle’s career is one of inconsistency, Gaslight has been troubled with this will to win and has finished second best on innumerable occasions. Polar Force continues to play shy of putting his best foot forward or simply he has lost his zest which had seen him win two races on the trot during the Bangalore Summer Season. Gaslight was backed to the exclusion of his rivals while the rest in the fray were available at lucrative odds. There were some takers for Prince Valiant who was running after a really long lay off but the erstwhile valiant performer did not take kindly to the race and finished down the field, obviously troubled by a physical problem. Arabian Storm ran prominently in front and had the first run on his opponents but when Capannelle moved up strongly inside the final furlong, he did not have the stuff to carry on the fight. Gaslight joined issue with Capannelle but the latter was always traveling the better of the two and jockey Ruzzan thus booted him his first winner after a fairly long gap in Bangalore. Arabian Storm finished third ahead of a late-finishing Polar Force who nosed out Just Brave for the fourth slot. The controversial Red Mamma finally made it to the winner’s enclosure, edging out Space Craft close home in the Jeenabhai Davidoss Memorial Plate. When two runners from the same stable with good credentials are entered in the same race, punters are always at a loss to gauge the situation and they cannot be blamed if they make a wrong decision and end up cursing the situation. Red Mamma and Space Craft enjoyed support in equal measure while the support for Newmachar was misplaced. Space Craft did all the running in the straight but Red Mamma, with hardly any perceptible effort on the part of her pilot Silva Storai, overhauled the front-runner in the shadow of the post. Initiation ran on to finish third. Zareer Darashah trained Royal Assault swamped the opposition in the March Plate (Div I) in splendid fashion to herald her arrival as a youngster of immense potential. Her sire Royal Kingdom has already made a big splash with a series of first season winners from his fist crop. There was inspired support for Cellisima but the daughter of Tejano was flat-footed as Royal Assault led from the word `go’ and then spurted away from the opposition for an imposing win. Clas readily justified the strong support for him in the lower division of the race, easily overhauling soul mate War Head for a comfortable win. Sharp N Smart made his move only after the race was in the safe keeping of the eventual winner and finished a noteworthy third. Ariba had all the credentials to win the Bandipur Cup (Div I) but it was Shubha Mangala who received inspired support in the ring. The favourite however was never in the hunt and the mistake of placing such trust on a horse from a stable which strikes once in a blue moon was borne out soon after the start when Shubha Mangala failed to take a forward position and then plodded home dismally. Ariba came through with a powerful run inside the final 100 metres to win from Power of Dreams who is slowly showing signs of returning to winning form. Green Park was third while She’s A Bird who received inspired support, was not sighted. She’s A Bird belongs to a stable which normally fails even when strongly fancied and as such, when the mare had no immediate form, hope in her success proved disastrous. Trainer Dominic had relief coming his way when Sense of Style put daylight between himself and the rest in the Ramnagar Plate. Dominic has been going through a lean patch and as such, he had reason to smile when another of his ward's, Alagi resolutely held on to win from on-money favourite Aiyana to give him a double. Silver Victress got up in time to nose out Candrakanta in the day’s other action.
