FIELD OF DREAMS OBLIGES IN FD WADIA TROPHY
By Usman Rangila | 17 Aug 2024 | PUNE
Mr S R Sanas, Mr Munchi P Shroff & trainer Dallas Todywalla leading Field of Dreams (Akshay Kumar up), winner of The F D Wadia Trophy (Gr.3)
The chestnut filly Field Of Dreams got an inspired ride from Akshay Kumar as she went on to dismiss Yash Narredu-driven Dash’s attempt to claim the F. D. Wadia Trophy (Gr.3), the main attraction of the concluding day of the three-day racing bonanza offered by the Royal Western India Turf Club. Turn And Burn went surging into the lead as the starter’s flag came down and brought the field headed by Baklava into the home stretch. As Turn And Burn slowed down at the turn, Yash drove Dash to grab the lead even as Don Carlos, who was looking to make his run towards the inner rails got bumped by Baklava, who suddenly shifted in. Akshay swiftly got the Dallas Todywalla-saddled filly to stage her entry and went gunning for his main rival. Field Of Dreams raised a fluent gallop and just as she was poised to overhaul Dash, the latter drifted out. Yash corrected Dash’s drift but Field Of Dreams (Leitir Mor – Realmsoffantasy) wore him down just a few metres away from the winning post to avenge her twin defeat at the hands of the colt at the start of her career. Antony Raj aboard Redefined, who lay last till the bend, was a bit tentative when making his move after entering the straight. Redefined was full of running in the closing stages of the race, however, Field Of Dreams had the race sewn up by then and won sparing three-part of a length to the former who pegged back Dash for the runner-up berth. Don Carlos, who was knocked out of contention by Baklava, ran a faraway fourth. The winner is jointly owned by Dr Cyrus S. Poonawalla, Mr Adar C. Poonawalla, Mrs Natasha A. Poonawalla, Messrs. Munchi P. Shroff, D. R. Thacker, Kairus Dadachanji, S. R. Sanas, Saleem Fazelbhoy and Mukul Sonawala. The filly was bred at the Poonawallas’ owned Cyza Agro and Stud Farms.
Friday’s racing would be etched in Pradeep Chouhan’s memory for a lifetime as he saddled the first winner of his career as a trainer through Dream Seller. Chouhan donned his new role on Thursday but had to wait till the end of the week to taste his maiden success. Sandesh-partnered Soup And Sandwich took off smartly from the blocks but jockey R. Ajinkya brought Dream Seller quickly to race on her haunches and followed her into the straight. With little over a furlong left for the wire, Ajinkya got busy with Dream Seller and challenged Soup And Sandwich who too was off the bridle. Both horses went stride for stride in the last furlong with Sandesh vigorously driving Soup And Sandwich to try and repel Dream Seller’s attack but the latter got stronger in the last fifty metres to emerge victorious eventually. Soup And Sandwich ended up second with her stable-mate Queens Pride finishing third ahead of Il Volo.
Five-year old Nobility started the day on a winning note for veteran trainer MK Jadhav, who led in favourite Serrano later in the day to achieve a double. Nobility (Decorated Knight – Alfajer) went in pursuit of Zacapa, who seized the initiative soon after jumping out of the stalls and dictated the terms till the field turned for home. Nobility responded positively to Prashant Dhebe’s urgings and lengthened her strides to overtake Zacapa in the last furlong and was ridden out to stay beyond the reach of Goldiva. Sandesh-ridden favourite Goldiva was lethargic at the start and was forced to play the bridesmaid’s role as she finished on late as usual . Zacapa and Northbound followed them home.
Sparingly-raced Serrano lived up to the expectations but NS Parmar had to go flat out to catch hold of Aries, who relished running in the front. Bhawani Singh brushed Aries to head the field whilst Parmar quickly improved Serrano’s position and went in chase of the leader. Aries had a good lead after the heads turned for home and appeared to be kicking on for an upset win before Serrano (Twilight Son – Merletta) warmed up to his task. Jadhav’s trainee swooped down on Aries in the shadow of the winning post and went on to register the second success of his career. Supreme Spirit, Ariyana Star and Attained, who were expected to pose a threat to Serrano’s chances, were clearly outpaced. Supreme Spirit was a long-neck in front of Ariyana Star, who in turn finished an identical distance ahead of Walter.
Three-year old Aperol, who had left the maiden ranks last month, tried to make every post of the seven furlong journey for the Truefitt & Hill Trophy a winning one but was overpowered by favourite Kariena in the final stages of the race. CS Jodha-piloted Aperol found himself leading the field as none of the other contenders showed any interest in calling the shots. Sandesh had Kariena settled close behind Goomah and Floyd who chased Aperol till the final bend. Sandesh brought Kariena into contention as soon as Aperol entered the straight and launched his assault. Karthik Ganapathy-groomed Kariena (Excellent Art – Santa Ana), who was back in Class IV after a lung-opener at the start of this season, made her maturity count as she wore down Aperol and sauntered home to record her third career win. Kings Love came with a late run to finish third, a head behind runner-up Aperol. Pure ran fourth while the rest of the field seemed to be out for an airing.
Soon afterwards, Sandesh achieved a back-to-back double when he steered Trigger to brilliant start-to-finish victory in the PanelService247 Gaming Trophy, reserved for maiden juveniles and run over five-furlongs. Faisal Abbas-trained Trigger (Gusto – Keevah) came well from the outside draw to grab the lead and Sandesh kept her on course all the way to log in her maiden success. Creative Girl and Esconido, who were better fancied than Trigger, never raised any hopes as they graced the wrong end of the field and failed to figure on the judges’ board. Touch Of Gold and Gypsy Soul were in futile chase of the winner and ended up taking the second and third spot ahead of Baleno.
Flashing Famous, who had done enough to suggest an impending success in future, was judiciously placed by HJ Antia in the set of older horses and the mare justified the faith imposed by her master as also the punters. Jockey PS Kaviraj-driven Flashing Famous (Kingda Ka – La Tonnarella) raced abreast of Khaleesi, who showed out in front till calling it a day at the bend. Kaviraj then got Flashing Famous to steal a march over her rivals and scampered home to win quite easily from Etoile. Dufy ran on to take the third spot edging out both Champagne Smile and Demetrius by a nose and short-head respectively.
