Star of Windsor swamps the opposition

Trainer Ganapathy continued his incredible run as he saddled Star of Windsor to victory in the Gr 1 Stayers Cup on Saturday. Star of Windsor literally trounced the opposition, going clear of the field at the top of the straight to win in a record timing of three minutes 7.42 seconds, bettering the old timing of Alameda which stood at three minutes 11.4 seconds by clipping of nearly four seconds off the existing mark. Star of Windsor who spent the early part of his racing career in Chennai without any success returned to his home centre with a bang to provide trainer Ganapathy his first success in the event in the home turf of Dr M A M Ramaswamy. Adolfito was expected to be a force to reckon with in this grueling race but the son of Tejano who has splendid achievements to his name at Hyderabad is a horse for the course and he certainly did not relish the underfoot conditions and the injury on the hock during the race also caused him to run below his known ability. May be he enjoys a cut in the ground but there was no mercy for this game performer. Last year's Indian Derby winner Simply Supreme, who has been winless since then, led the field with Adolfito in close attendance followed by Brown Sugar and Star of Windsor. Obligado and Baffert were in the rear of the field. Srinath pushed Adolfito to the front approaching the final bend even as Prakash got busy on Star of Windsor. The lead was short-lived as Adolfito faded out as Brown Sugar clipped him, causing him a bleeding injury. Star of Windsor overhauled him easily and stretched away to win by a widening margin of over three lengths. Brown Sugar snatched the second place. Baffert moved from the rear with a flourish but he could do no better than finishing third, ahead of Obligado. Steinbeck (Mr Prospector) who sired Star of Windsor had success in this event in the last edition held in Chennai as well through his another progeny Alameda. Bred at the Usha Stud Farm, Star of Windsor who had won the Bangalore Derby last year had been pretty consistent and he put his best forward on this occasion after a noteworthy and leisurely fourth at Bangalore in the Stayers Trial Stakes.
