Blue Horizon justified the great expectations by winning the Gr 1 The Hindu Sprinters Cup in a record time of one minute 10.27 seconds on Saturday. The Sprinters Cup is the first of the four Grade 1 races lined up for the Indian Turf Invitation Cup weekend races. Trainer Imtiaz Sait and his wards appear to have taken a great liking for the Chennai track and Blue Horizon was his third winner in the premier event. Carnival and Recardo had done him proud in the past. Albertini held the record with a timing of one minute 11 seconds flat. Blue Horizon was turned out in impeccable condition by the trainer. The daughter of Placerville had the race sewn up well before Coral Gables circled round the field and came on the wide outside with a fantastic dash. The winning post came to the rescue of the front-runner who was well served by the favourable draw and the forward position that her jockey Srinath had maneuvered. The four-year old filly, bred by the famed Poonawalla Stud Farm, struck a purple patch toward the fag end of the Pune racing season in October and has not looked back since for an amazing sequence of six unbeaten runs. For owner Sunil Jhangiani who has been enjoying a good slice of luck, this was his second success in the event as he had earlier won through Bryce Canyon at Hyderabad two years ago. Blue Horizon went into the race as a firm favourite though this event has always been known for nasty surprises that it throws up with irritable consistency. Great Strides had his share of supporters while Rosmini who has gone through a tumultuous career, interrupted by three surgeries to his knee, was also expected to be right there at the finish notwithstanding the outside draw. Fly The Fury and Blue Horizon quickly moved up to the front as the starter dispatched the 15-horse field for the six furlong trip, with Richard Hughes on Rosmini doing well to work his way from the outside draw to be in a striking third position. Coral Gables could not be positioned in a forward position by his jockey and he looked a hopeless cause as he was at the rear end of the field. Srinath pushed Blue Horizon past Fly The Fury and the daughter of Placerville showed a good turn of foot to surge clear of the field even as Rosmini flattered to deceive. With no threat on the horizon, Blue Horizon shaped to win with a great deal of comfort but Coral Gables, with a late dash, raised some false hope in his supporters. Coral Gables was shy at the finish by a mere half length. Great Strides edged out Fly the Fury for the third slot. The going was hard and the course record did not come as a surprise. The underfoot conditions at this part of the year in Chennai favours the front-runners as they can last out in these conditions. There was a cloud of dust as the runners took the final bend and Coral Gables was perhaps drowned by it! Rosmini had all the chances but then he has had a grueling career which has taken it toll and the hard track certainly did no good to him.
