Mrs Menaka Gupta, Mr Achuthan Siddharth and trainer Aashay Doctor leading Trakila (Yash Narredu up), winner of the HPSL Calcutta Fillies Trial Stakes

Trainer Aashay Doctor’s Trakila (Western Aristocrat – Nickel Chrome) was given a flawless ride by Yash Narredu to lift the HPSL Calcutta Fillies Trial Stakes in great style by a good four lengths at RCTC on Tuesday. The speedy filly was taken to the helm of affairs by her reliable rider early in the race and stayed there all the way without much ado. The other four runners were seen struggling to keep pace with her – the worst sufferer being the second favourite Lady Sunshine. The last named finished last of five on the outer rails under the stick. A veterinary examination will reveal whether all is right with the filly who was given an appalling ride. After a slightly slow start, she was seen to race four wide and then made to accelerate at the bend which inevitably took her to the  outer rails.

Several professionals completed a brace during the afternoon – Patrick Quinn combined with A Sandesh, Aashay Doctor and Yash Narredu, and Bharath Singhwith Antony Raj. After his dismal effort in the Fillies Trial Stakes atop Lady Sunshine, jockey Antony Raj made amends in the Stewards Cup astride Bharath Singh – trained Agnostic (Top Class – Kabini). Coming in the wake of his triumph in the Calcutta Monsoon Sprint, the crack sprinter recorded his second successive victory. He was seen to race in third spot behind Cool Rider and Savvy Chic till into the straight where he took over the running and drew away. Public choice Etosha suffered a mishap after bleeding profusely. He veered out sharplywell before the home turn, broke the outer rails and collapsed. It is learnt that his condition is improving while his jockey Neeraj Rawal may have suffered a collar-bone fracture. Bharath Singh and Antony Raj completed a brace when their filly Norwegian Wood (Win Legend – Woodberg) bagged the mile race for The Richie Rich Handicap quite comfortably from the favourite Aeropoli. Both the winner and runner-up are ones for the notebook.

Trainer Patrick Quinn and Sandesh combined fruitfully to bring home the bacon with a well-backed double. Sandesh had to work hard on Fancy Nancy (Roderic O’Connor – Remembrance Of You) to get the better of runaway Kay Star near the winning post and pocket the upper division of The True Colours Handicap. In the very next race – the lower division of the same event – Sandesh enjoyed an armchair ride astride King’s Retreat (Letir Mor – Balmoral Castle) to win as he liked. Thereafter, trainer Aashay Doctor and Yash Narredu combined to fetch home the honours in the first of their two winners during the afternoon. Their filly Meropi (Western Aristocrat – Panamera) won the Silver Fox Handicap as she liked by six lengths from Blackstone.

The afternoon commenced with a high-priced winner from the stable of trainer Anil Kumar. His colt Liban (Total Gallery – Megara) moved with giant strides in the straight to edge out the front-running favourite Winsangel at the wire. Jockey Vinay Jaiswal rode the top-weight with great gusto to land the spoils in dramatic manner.
