Mr Mahesh V Chakankar and trainer J S Pillay (Vivek G up), winner of The M.S.Suresh Memorial Trophy
Form played true, Saint Emilion apart, most of the fancied contestants justifying their ranking and top billing in the seven event-card. The on-money favourite Dabeet from Jaishankar Pillay's yard, who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring proved too good in the plum event, the MS Suresh Memorial Trophy, effortlessly cruising home in the hands of G Vivek. The public rage, who in his last start failed to successfully negotiate the mile long journey, finishing third behind the winner Athulya and Natural Speed, produced a heartwarming performance over seven furlongs and on the strength of this performance is set to add another win to his kitty in the weeks ahead. All credit to Jaishankar Pillay, who after gaining license last season has done exceedingly well to lead in a couple of good winners, Dabeet, Drisana and Sherouk from the limited number of horses in his yard and that's a good sign taking into account that Mysore has emerged a competitive centre.
Pillay sent out Dabeet spot on for the plum event and the in-form chestnut gelding provided Vivek an arm-chair ride to success, assuming command at the top of the straight and quickly putting the race to bed in the final furlong. The grey High Opinion followed the winner home ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring, Dynamic Force, while Absolute Conquerer completed the frame. A delighted Pillay pleased with the start he has made disclosed that it so far has been very satisfactory and it will only get better with the support of a couple of new good owners. Well he has sent out the message that he understands and knows the trade and it will not be long before he accumulates the ammunition to fire.
The principal added attraction, the Dennis & Yvonne Jarvis Memorial Trophy split into three divisions saw the Dinesh Pujar-trained Saint Emilion record a shock victory in the first division. The second division was claimed by the second in demand at the betting ring Smile Of Beauty from Dominic's yard before the piping hot favourite Chotipari from the stables of Warren Singh donkey-licked her 11 rivals in the third division run over a sprint.
A facile last start winner, Emerald Queen from Bobby's yard piloted by apprentice jockey Abishek was strongly fancied to score in the first division. Backed down from (5/2) to even-money Emerald Queen after raising hopes at the top of the straight went `phut' like a pricked balloon and at this juncture Alex Rozario astride the rankoutsider Saint Emilion streaked ahead and gallantly held on to score from the eight to one shot River Of Gold and the run-away last start winner Flying Falcon. Emerald Queen only managed to finish fourth, while another fancied contestant Lauterbrunnen from Narayan Gowda's yard was never in the hunt.
Super Kind from Pradeep Annaiah's yard, Mansoor Khan-trained Natural Light and Smile Of Beauty from the stables of Dominic topped the betting board in the second division before the supporters of Super Kind went bang-bang in the betting ring and the Pradeep ward partnered by Abishek Matre closed firm favourite, while Natural Light and Smile Of Beauty were offered at (3/1). The nohoper Infiniteposibility and Natural Light hit the front closely followed by Super Kind and Smile Of Beauty before Koshi Kumar who did well to gain a favourable position early on in the race after jumping out from draw (12) shot ahead when the race came on a boil and then quickly put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Super Kind finished on purposefully at end to take the runner-up berth ahead of Natural Light who is certain to benefit most from this suggestive run under his belt.
Pitted against mediocre rivals in the third division of the Dennis & Yvonne Jarvis Memorial Trophy, Chotipari looked hard to toss and the speedy grey in the hands of in-form Sai Kiran made every post a winning one without raising a sweat. Warren who led in the most impressive winner of the day, earlier led in the favourite Meghann, a smart winner of the opening event, the lower division of the Squanderer Plate run over a distance of 1100 metres. Lesser fancied Epsom Downs followed the winner home ahead of Firefinch, while Chiraag was clearly not in the hunt, offered at (6/1) after opening at (2/1).
The upper division was claimed by the four to one shot Celerio from Santosh's yard piloted by Afsar Khan. The winner hit the front soon after the dozen-horse field came under the starter's flag and never let the initiative slip, bravely pegging back the belated effort of the topweighted Tropical Mist and the favourite Benzema from Faraz Arshad's yard.
A ten to one shot, Super Sexy from the stables of Hellal Moses made every post a winning one in the hands of promising apprentice Koshi Kumar who later guided home Smile Of Beauty to record a double. The Bipin Salvi-trained Elevado was touted as a `moral certainty' in the Shivakashi Plate run over a sprint, but all that the Bipin trainee did was take a lot of good money down the drain finishing down the field much to the disappointment of the large following who made big investments on the Bipin ward. Square Cut,it was clear found the sprint trip a trifle short and was seen warming up late on the scene to take the runner-up spot ahead of Country's Light who was strongly fancied in place and the Joseph ward in the hands of Prabhakaran did well to finish third much to the joy of his supporters.
