By Ikram Khan | 20 Sep 2024 | MYSORE
Mr Ashok Ranpise & Mr Teja Gollapudi receiving the Mysore 1000 Guineas (Gr.3) from Mr.K.M. Chandre Gowda, Chairman & Senior Steward of Mysore Race Club
Arguably the best filly on the Indian racing circuit, Excellent Lass recorded her second classic success without really working up sweat. The star performer, winner of the Fillies Championship Stakes in the Bangalore summer season, after her victory in the Poonawalla Multi-Million in Mumbai is in a class of her own and up against four mediocre rivals in the first classic of the Mysore season, the 1000 Guineas, it was easy as easy as sweeping autumn leaves from the garden path. Top saddle artiste Suraj Narredu who partnered her in her maiden classic success after her sublime effort in the richest race for juveniles at Mahalaxmi, didn't need to move a muscle, while he chose to hit the front and set his own pace before the top lass galloped home nice and easy in the mile long classic journey. Excellent Lass next will contest in the Deccan Derby at Malakpet (Hyderabad) on Oct 2 and the `Queen' filly will prove to be a tough nut to crack in the city of nawabs taking into account that no local horses pose a threat to the Rajesh Narredu-trained star filly and the top colt African Gold from Parvati Byramji's yard is not likely to compete in the blue riband on D-day.
Suraj, most satisfied with her effort in Mysore disclosed that the classic proved to be a good prep race before the big contest in Hyderabad on Gandhi Jayanthi day. And she is ready for the big one. "She is a beautiful filly and she understands what her job is and she accomplishes her mission without a fuss, said Suraj pointing out that she is very calm and collected and easy to ride during the morning trials. "We are lucky that each year we are managing to get one who has ensured that the Narredu camp stays on the classic scene," said Suraj. The champion saddle artiste who, to his credit has booted home more than 100 classic winners revealed that the owners of Excellent Lass are enjoying the big success and they deserve it. "In a syndicated ownership they picked up quality stock and they are now reaping the rewards, " said Suraj adding that it is totally team work and all the staff at the stables have played their role.
Proud owner Ashok Ranpise and Teja Gollapudi who led in Global Influence, winner of the HPSL Calcutta Colts Trial Stakes on Tuesday delighted with the result at Mysore are now looking forward to continue the classic run at Hyderabad. " She is in fine form and the Derby trip is wellwithin her compass and she readily produces her best in her effort to score," said Ashok Ranpise lauding the effort of Suraj and Rajesh, who have left no stone unturned in their effort to maintain her form and more importantly the condition required to succeed in the top league.
For the record Finley from Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard expectedly followed the leader home ahead of Sherouk from Jaishankar Pillay's yard, while Chotipari after tracking Excellent Lass for most part of the classic trip ran out of gas at the top of the straight and only managed to finish ahead of Joon, the last one home in the classic exercise.
The favourite Seolfor Bullet from Kamath's yard powerfully piloted by leading saddle artiste Akshay Kumar came out on top in the Original Vel Racing Trophy run over a sprint. The winner produced a sparkling gallop in the final furlong to edge out the second in demand at the betting Court Jester from the stables of Monnappa. Lesser fancied Emerald Queen from Bobby's yard finished third ahead of Moonlight Queen, while the second in demand at the betting ring, Sparkling Night surprisingly performed below par, finishing down the field much to the disappointment of her large following.
Earlier in a pulse-pounding finish, the on-money favourite Galahad from the stables of Sulaiman Attaollahi edged out the local mainhope Aabushan by the shortest of margins much to the relief of all the big bettors who wagered big on the Sulaiman ward in the Dr MAM Ramaswamy Trophy, the principal added attraction run over a mile.Akshay produced an exemplary effort to win a race he certainly would have lost had Angad guiding the fortunes of Aabushan had not gone wide at the top of the straight and Angad again let Aabushan shift out at a crucial juncture before the local challenger again stormed up to flash past the post locked together before the `magic eye' nodded in favour of the grey. Philosophy despite her earlier listless efforts was surprisingly backed down from (4/1) to (5/2) in this event, but the totally out of form mare found the going tough against the fancied contestants and finished down the field.
The heavily backed on-money favourite Natural One from Vinesh Naik's yard proved too good in the Psychic Strength Pl,ate run over a distance of seven furlongs. Leading pro G Vivek produced a copybook effort on the winner who is set to provide an encore. Lesser fancied Coyote Girl followed the smart winner home ahead of Free Spirited, while NRI Touch completed the frame.
The Ramesh-trained Sky Storm and Pettes Love from the stables of Neil Devaney garnered the maximum support in the opening event, the Sidapur Plate and the two top fancies fought it out before Sky Storm piloted by Kiran Rai gained the day, a `neck' separating the two at the wire. One Diamond fancied strongly in place finished third justifying the confidence of his supporters. The next event, the lower division of the Panchgani Plate was declared null and void following a false start, And the last race was cancelled following a thunder shower which left the track unconducive for racing.
