Mrs Menaka Gupta, Mrs Smita Bajoria & trainer Aashay Doctor leading Meropi (Yash Narredu up), winner of The Multitude Cup

Trainer Aashay Doctor’s ‘sprint queen’ Meropi  went on to complete a facile hat-trick of wins at RCTC on Tuesday when she bagged the six-furlong sprint for The Multitude Cup without batting an eyelid in the hands of an extremely confident Yash Narredu. It was yet another amazing performance by the daughter of Western Aristocrat out of Panamera – this time in the highest class. The handicapper has penalised her a whopping 7.5kg for this triumph. It seems this sprinter par excellence is now ready for the ‘terms’ events in the following winter season. The Multitude Cup saw her racing a handy third behind Golden Oaks and Cool Rider till the distance post where she stepped on the gas and took over the running to win as she liked. With this victory, Yash Narredu completed a double on the day as he had earlier piloted Arti Doctor-trained filly Sky Force (Fiero-Ha Ha Tonka) to a smashing start-to-finish victory in the Bold Raider Plate for maidens. The filly was the first to jumpout of the gates while the second favourite Mathangi was slow into her stride.

The seven-furlong race for The Slade Valley Handicap saw Patrick Quinn-trained Blackstone (Planetaire-Polydances) at his best as he left the field standing in the final furlong. Galaticus was a struggling runner-up. Jockey Sandesh on the 13/10 favourite Blackstone had him racing a handy second behind the pace-setter where he took over the running to win as he liked.

The afternoon commenced with both trainer Shafiq Khan and Md Sameer combining fruitfully to notch up their first triumph of the season with a lucrative gamble on the filly Oh My Sweetheart. The grey filly by Sir Cecil out of Heirloom was handled confidently by Sameer to land the spoils in the seven-furlong event for The No Regrets Handicap. Though boxed in for a major part of the race, the well-prepared filly displayed marvellous acceleration to sail past the front-runners in the straight and register her maiden victory. She may well have more races in store for her. She is still in the lowest category after incurring a penalty of 5kg for this victory.

B Mahesh-trained five-year-old bay gelding Wonderful (Excellent Art – Silver beauty) showed that the mile trip suits him to the hilt. He pocketed the Sreepriya Handicap after a keentussle with the favourite Zuma all the way down the straight. Felix was a creditable third. The curtain came down with the public choice Oromelo going down by a short-head to rank outsider War Trail (Air Support – Aprillia) in the 2000 metres race for the Fly Like The Wind Handicap. The Calcutta hairpin has not been kind to jockey Antony Raj who once again accelerated round the bend atop Oromelo and had her under the stick after being badly positioned for most part.It would be fair to say that poor handling cost her the race. Jockey Arman Khan on the Sabeel Shariff -trained front-runner faced no such problems as he was on a ‘catch-me-if-you-can’ mission atop six-year-old mare War Trail.
