Trainer Irfan Ghatala receiving the Maharaja's Cup (Gr.2) from Dr. Pramoda Devi Wadiyar

Most followers of form lost big money on Friday, only three favourites coming through in the competitive eight-event card. The 20 to one rank outsider Santorino from trainer Irfan Ghatala's yard stunned the railbirds, edging out the strongly supported Shamrock from Satish Narredu's yard in the Maharaja's Cup, the plum event run over a mile and the lesser fancied Grizzly from the stables of Warren Singh sent the `Jodi', Aralina and Stellantis out of the window in the MB Appaya Memorial Trophy run over a distance of seven furlongs.

Despite the fact that he was beaten fair and square by Once You Go Black from James McKeown's yard in their last head-to-head clash in the Bangalore summer season, the punters pinned their hopes again on the Satish Narredu schooled  Shamrock piloted by Suraj Narredu. The public choice after tracking the two nohopers, Knight In Hooves and Spectacular for most part of the mile long journey shot ahead at the top of the straight and looked set to score before Alex Rozario guiding the fortunes of Santorino in no mood to throw in the towel packed punch and the Irfan trainee slowly, yet surely closed the gap before sparing a `neck' to the top fancy at the wire. Second in demand at the betting ring, Prana piloted by Antony Raj managed to only save money in place, finishing third ahead of Trevalius, who performed much better than his more fancied stablemate Once You Go Black.

The Arjun Manglorkar schooled Aralina and Stellantis from Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard topped the betting board in the MB Appaya Memorial Trophy before the Arjun ward closed firm favourite. The `Jodi' in this race was considered safe by most big bettors, but to their surprise, it was the advantageously placed in at the scales Grizzly from Warren Singh's yard who proved too good in the hands of Vinod Shinde, romping home nice and easy to the delight of his supporters. Aralina who encountered traffic problems at a crucial juncture thanks to the injudicious effort of Saqlain finished second ahead of Stellantis, while D Gold Star completed the frame.

Earlier, Arjun Manglorkar led in the pipping hot favourite Disciple in the upper division of the Ranga Family Trophy. The talented filly, who made a winning debut in her last effort, beating Rodney by the shortest of margins in the Bangalore summer season was head and shoulders above her 14 rivals and she really didn't need to extend herself to chalk out her second straight success, cruising home ahead of the runner-up Sea Of Adventure, while Connecting Dots from Lokanath's yard finished a creditable third.

In the lower division of the event, the favourite Red Falcon  from Irfan Ghatala's yard finally managed to shed his maiden status powering home in the hands of BR Kumar who took no chances, racing in second position behind the nohoper Infiniteposibility before assuming command and quickly putting the race to bed in the final furlong. Carat Love followed the winner home ahead of the Warren-trained Enjoyable. The topweighted True Punch from MR Singh's yard, who in the end attracted a lot of support in the betting ring, hammered down from (5/2) to (18/10)  was never in the hunt and this cost his supporters dear. Now that Red Falcon has broken ice,it will pay to again support him next time out.

On the strength of his suggestive effort on the opening day of the season, close fourth behind the winner Sira, Sergeant Reckless from Monnappa's yard was strongly favoured to score in the concluding event, the Son Of The Light Handicap run over a sprint. But the heavily backed on -money favourite in the hands of the four-kilo claimer Faiz failed to gain a favourable position early on in the sprint trip and this cost him dear, the public choice despite finishing on purposefully at end failing to stop the eight to one shot NRI Touch from flashing past the post first. Coorg General sweetly fancied in place did well to finish third to the delight of his supporters, while the topweighted Tower Quest from Girinath's yard finished an easy fourth.

The six to one shot Felicita who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring, tracked Windy City for most part of the seven furlongs trip in the Aunty Pip Plate before hitting the front and galloping home in convincing fashion. Koshi Kumar produced a copybook effort on the Hellal Moses ward, pegging back the belated effort of the favourite Deemed To Fire and the second in demand at the betting ring, White Lies who raced in patches and eventually finished down the field.

The in-form Flying Falcon from Bipin Salvi's yard proved too good in the Shimsha Plate providing apprentice jockey Abishek Matre an arm-chair ride to success. The top fancy followed the leader, Furious Fun for most part of the sprint trip before Abishek pushed the public choice ahead at the top of the straight and the moment Flying Falcon hit the front, it was all over bar the shouting, the favourite sprinting home in resplendent style. Furious Fun  stayed on to gain the runner-up berth ahead of Sky Storm, while Island Lass missed out saving money in place.

After finishing a third in the opening event of the season, Double Vision from MR Singh's yard was fancied strongly in the opening event, the Penambur Plate run over a mile, but the public choice met a tartar in Sea Diamond who gained the day in the hands of Sai Kumar. The Neil Devanaey schooled Quick Witted who had his share of supporters finished a tame third ahead of Warrior Woman who appears to have improved and is one for the notebook.
