Trainer Vikram Appachu leading Jewel Thief (Angad up), winner of The Gool & Soli Poonawalla Memorial Trophy

Punters enjoyed a good run in the small card of five events on Wednesday. The Chief Minister's Trophy, the plum event was declared null and void following a false start.

Knocking at the door, Pettes Love from Neil Devaney's yard piloted by Dhanu Singh Deora finally earner her cornbill winning the opening event, the Hognekal Plate run over a mile. Quevega from Narayan Gowda's yard was strongly fancied to score in the opening event, but the public choice failed to make a favourable impression and to the isappointment of her supporters finished a tame third behind the runner-up Sand Castles, while Eco System, who had his fair share of followers never got going and only managed to complete the frame.

In the next event, the Bharachukki Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs, the second in demand at the betting ring, Vardaan from the stables of Rakesh piloted strongly by leading pro Antony Raj produced a winning gallop in the final furlong to romp home a deserving winner.  Lesser fancied Golden Bird from the stables of Helleal Moses followed the winner ahead of Saro Bird, who surprised most gaining the third spot. The well-backed Square Cut from Santosh Rao's yard raced in patches and it was clear that the public choice was not really keen to display his true potential in this event.

The Appachu schooled Jewel Thief was touted a `good bet' in the Gool & Soli Poonawalla Memorial Trophy run over a mile and the top fancy proved his connections right, providing Angad an arm-chair ride to success. The winner is in fine nick and it will pay to support this Appachu ward again next time out. Confident Game partnered by Mukesh Kumar gained the runner-up berth ahead of Bruce Almighty who in his attempt to make every post a winning one did well to hang in and save money in place.

The topweighted Lauterbrunnen from Narayan Gowda's yard garnered the maximum support in the Belur Plate run over a distance of 1100 metres and the overwhelming favourite in the hands of Kiran Rai showed a clear pair of heels to his 11 rivals, sprinting home nice and easy to the delight of his supporters. Chisox finished a suggestive second ahead of Ultimate Striker, who appears to be slowly and yet surely getting into the winning frame of mind.

Withdrawn last week, the Joseph Awale schooled Vayu proved too good in the concluding event, the Mandya Plate run over a sprint. The smart pillar to post winner piloted by Jagadeesh hit the front soon after the field of 10 runners came under the starter's flag and without unduly extending himself bolted in to the delight of all the big bettors who had invested big on the Joseph ward. First Impression finished a creditable second ahead of the second favourite Dalhousie who is certain to get into the winners' circle before the curtains are drawn after the Derby scheduled to be held on Oct 27.
