MEROPI LIFTS MAYFOWL CUP
By Epsom Ace | 14 Nov 2024 | KOLKATA
Mrs Menaka Gupta, Mrs Smita Bajoria & trainer Aashay Doctor leading Meropi (Yash Narredu Up), winner of The Mayfowl Cup
Aashay Doctor – trained four-year-old filly Meropi (Western Aristocrat – Panamera) left her closest rival Agnostic standing in the straight to lift The Mayfowl Cup run over seven furlongs. She made the sprint a start-to-finish affair in the hands of jockey Yash Narredu. Agnostic and Trevor did issue a challenge at the top of the straight but once Yash reminded the filly of her task, there was simply no stopping her. The one for the notebook is Savvy Chic who was always in touch with the leaders but was outclassed in the home stretch. In the days gone by, this event was considered a pointer to the prestigious Calcutta Gold Cup held in mid-December. However, none of the trio who competed in this sprint may be considered to be top-drawer milers – but one never knows in this wonderful game of uncertainties.
The Narredus were also in the spotlight in the last race of the day as Rajesh Narredu – trained three-year-old chestnut colt Global Influence (Roderic O’Connor – She), piloted by Suraj Narredu, mauled the opposition in the six-furlong sprint for the Noble View Handicap in excellent timing. Whether the connections will take a tilt at the 2000 Guineas with their colt is left to be seen. Runner-up Dali Swirl will be worth following in handicap events.
The Legal Steps Handicap saw Shafiq Khan- trained Oh My Sweetheart (Sir Cecil – Heirloom) get the better of fancied runners Champagnesupernova, Good Deeds and Jahzara. Nikhil Parmar rode a measured race on the grey as after a tardy beginning, he settled the fillybefore taking the rails. He then switched her out in the straight to win as he liked. The jockey did comment after the race that the bottom-weight helped his cause. Trainer Patrick Quinn’s Lineupandcollect (David Livingston – Satwa was a failed favourite last time out. On this occasion, the four-year-old chestnut gelding was backed to the hilt and closed at 45 paise. Jockey Sandesh however had to work hard on the public choice to get the better of front-running George Everest.
The upper division of The Relevance Handicap saw the public choice Fresh Hope (Top Class – Vijay Sakhi) from trainer B Rajender Reddy’s yard make every post a winning one in the safe hands of BR Kumar. Runner-up Yuvi was a notable second. Third placed Soul Music may prefer a slightly longer trip. In the lower division of the same event, four-year-old colt Liban (Total Gallery – Megara) from Anil Kumar’s yard pulled it off despite drifting out to the outer rails with PS Kaviraj astride.
