Trainer Warren Singh leading Shubankar (Akshay Kumar up). winner of The Deepak Khaitan Memorial Guindy Gold Cup (Gr.3)
Most favourites took a back seat and the punters returned home with a hole in the pocket. The Bengaluru raider Shubankar a ten to one shot came up tops in the Deepak Khaitan Guindy Gold Cup, while the two most fancied Bengaluru hopefuls, Siege Courageous from trainer Prasanna Kumar's yard and Shamrock from the stables of Satish Narredu lost out in a humdinger. Siege Courageous after looking set to score in the final furlong ran out of gas 100 metres from home and so did Shamrock who after getting past the leader Shubankar let the initiative slip close home, the grey in the hands of top gun Akshay Kumar rallying splendidly to snatch the verdict from the fast finishing Mysore hopeful Iron Clad at the shadow of the winning post. It simply was a dream finish, the winner edging out the runner-up by the shortest of margins while the fourth placed Siege Courageous was only a length behind Shubankar.
The principal added attraction, the Adjudicate Trophy was claimed by the second in demand at the betting ring, King's Battalion powerfully piloted by leading saddle artiste Trevor Patel. After the top choice This Is Gold piloted by leading pro Yash Narredu in his attempt to make every post a winning one in the seven furlongs trip, to the disappointment of her supporters shot her bolt at the top of the straight, Opus One briefly headed the field before Trevor packed punch on the Fahad Khan ward and King's Battalion responding gamely to his master's call produced a winning gallop in the final furlong to score from Rubirosa and the Hyderabad challenger Hurricane Bay. The winner is in fine form and is in line to record a hat-trick if his connections quickly exploit his form in the weeks ahead.
Top pro Yash Narredu who is enjoying a fine run, found the going tough losing out on three top public fancies before he partnered Brilliant Lady to an impressive win in the upper division of the Baeed Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. Twice third from her last two starts this season, the grey produced a sparkling gallop at the top of the straight to assume command and zoom home in resplendent style. Sierra Dela Plata from James McKeown's yard was fancied sweetly by the insiders and the right connections, but the well-backed mare found Brilliant Lady too hot to handle and had to rest content with the runner-up berth. The topweighted Swarga, who too had a fair share of his supporters on the strength of his impressive showing in his last essay, second behind Suryakrishi last week again failed to earn a winning bracket, coming home third.
Yash earlier guiding the fortunes of Krishvi from Mandanna's yard finished down the field much to the chagrin of the followers of form. The five to one shot Rise Again in the hands of leading pro C Umesh gained the advantage when the race came on a boil and held on gamely to peg back the challenge of the second in demand at the betting ring, Kings Return. Bomber Jet surprised most finishing third ahead of Mahadevi, while the speedy Abnegator after calling the shots for most part of the sprint lacked the gas in the tank to keep going and eventually finished in the ruck.
Next astride the on-money favourite Vandhiyathevan, another from Mandanna's yard, Yash was never in the hunt, the public choice failing to keep pace with the field for most part of the trip and as a result was never in the reckoning for the top most. spot in the upper division of the Blue Horizon Handicap run over a sprint. Rank outsider Knotty Power from Ramanathan's yard stunned the railbirds galloping home ahead of the consistent Robert Foley trainee Juliet Rose, who finished second from her last four starts this season. Royal Chivalry from the stables of B Suresh, another consistent performer saved money in place finishing third after his eye catching second behind Assimilate in his last essay.
In the concluding event, the lower division of the Baeed Handicap, Yash astride the public rage Pluto in line for a hat-trick was expected to come on top, but that was not to be,the short-priced favourite making sure that a majority of punters walked back home with a hole in the pocket, going down narrowly to the ten to one shot Bluemed from the stables of Sebastian piloted by Sai Kumar. After travelling nice and easy all through the seven furlongs exercise, Yash put Pluto in top gear approaching the distance post and the pipping hot favourite quickly moved up to storm into contention before going down to Bluemed. Golden Legend finished third ahead of Sweet Fragrance, stablemate of Pluto.
The six to one shot Alexander from Ajith Kumar's yard piloted by the in-form Alex Rozario and the seven to one chance Atreides from Fahad Khan's yard were the two other outsiders who waltzed to victory on a day form played truant and the bookmakers laughed all the way to the bank.
