CAPE WICKHAM PROVES TOO GOOD

By Ikram Khan | 23 Nov 2024 | CHENNAI

Trainer James Mckeown leading Cape Wickham (Yash Narredu Up), winner of The Madras Race Club Equine Hospital Trophy

Trainer Robert Foley and the talented saddle artiste Sah Farid Ansari combined successfully to chalk out a nourishing double through two lesser fancied winners, Juliet Rose and Royal Supremacy. The former, who had finished second in her last four starts got the monkey off her back, producing a winning gallop approaching the distance post to sail home to the delight of her supporters, who trusted her ability to score in the opening event, the Nasa Handicap  after she failed to break ice in all her four earlier starts and needed the rub of the green to earn her winning bracket.  The McKeown schooled Val D'Aran followed the winner home ahead of Greeley, while the favourite Rise Again failed to save even money in place.

Spurred by the success, Farid Ansari booted home the lesser fancied Royal Supremacy to a comfortable victory in the next event, the Norfolk Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs The winner after his suggestive last effort, came good snuffing out the challenge of the Vijay Singh schooled Aletta, while the Fahad Khan-trained Annalisa, stablemate of the strongly fancied favourite Abilitare performed much better than her fancied stablemate to finish third ahead of War Emblem. Abilitare never got going and it was clear half-way home, that the public choice would finish down the field. Abilitare did just that taking a lot  of good money down the drain.

The Parmar schooled Astapor garnered top billing in the Little Over Handicap run over a mile. But the overwhelming favourite after gaining a favourable position lacked the gas in the tank to make a race of it and much to the chagrin of the followers of form failed to make the board. The second in demand at the betting ring, Larado from Sebastian's yard confidently piloted by Kuldeep proved too good, displaying good turn of foot in the final furlong to score from Blue Eyed Boy and the Rupa schooled Royal Falcon who was sweetly fancied in place by the Rupa camp.

The five to one shot Cape Wickham who had finished a creditable second behind King's Battalion in his last essay over a mile relished the extended trip and in the hands of leading pro Yash Narredu donkey-licked his 10 rivals powering home beating Wolf Creek by a margin of five lengths. Queen Anula surprised most, finishing third ahead of Key To The Mint, while the Rajesh Narredu schooled Imperial Star was never in the hunt. Cape Wickham is in good nick and is set to provide an encore.

On the strength of her impressive showing, second behind Smiles of Fortune in her last essay, the McKeown schooled Gold Ride was fancied most in the Sunday Silence Handicap run over a sprint. The top fancy much to the disappointment of her large following met a tartar in Crown Drive who notched up his third victory of the season. Spirit Of The Rose finished third and it will not be long before this Ramanathan trainee earns her corn bill in the month ahead.

The well-backed Charukala from Vijay Singh's yard came up trumps in the final event, the Doncaster Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. The favourite, a picture of fitness at the parade ring readily  justified  the confidence of the Vijay Singh camp donkey-licking her seven rivals while cruising home without being unduly extended by her pilot Hindu Singh. Now that Charukala has broken ice after a couple of below par efforts, it will pay to follow the vastly improved  filly again next time out.
