RESILIENT TRAKILA PEGS BACK DUBAI PRINCESS
By Epsom Ace | 28 Nov 2024 | KOLKATA
Mrs Menaka Gupta, Mr Marthand Singh Mahindra and trainer Aashay Doctor leading Trakila (Yash Narredu up), winner of The Calcutta 1000 Guineas (Gr.3)
Aashay Doctor-trained Trakila (Western Aristocrat – Nickel Chrome) bounced back after a setback to lift the Calcutta 1000 Guineas in great style. Jockey Yash Narredu had the big-boned filly racing a handy fourth till the turning for home where he urged her to take over the running from the course favourite Dubai Princess who had a little earlier swept past front-running Sky Force at the top of the home straight. Trakila responded magnificently to Yash’s urgings and collared Dubai Princess to win by 23/4 lengths. The rest of the field were simply outclassed by the top-rated pair of fillies. Breeder Marty Mahindra said after the race that the filly has sufficient staying blood to suggest that she can stay the longer classics coming up. The fact that she was held back in fourth slot before making her final run in the straight suggests that she may well negotiate the mile-and-half trip without too much trouble.
One race earlier, Patrick Quinn-trained Blackstone (Planetaire - Polydences) lifted the RWITC Cup in the hands of Sandesh. In the process the gelding notched up his seventh win from his last eight starts. Shouldering a heavy impost, the favourite Blackstone was settled in second spot by his rider while Sea Lion called the early shots. Once at the top of the straight, Sandesh stepped on the gas and the four-year-old bay gelding responded brilliantly. Six-year-old Buckley was a good second while third placed White Roses may prefer a longer trip.
The afternoon commenced with Javed Khan-trained Tres Bien (Roderic O’Connor - Yesteryear) sticking to the form book and bagging the Liberty Handicap run over six furlongs. Imran Chisty rode the six-year-old favourite to a comfortable victory over four-year-old Honey Cake who led till before the distance post. The next event - The Simply Sensational Handicap - run over 2000 metres saw Bath-trained Balance installed as the firm on-money public choice. However, the lethargic filly failed to respond to her task at a crucial juncture. Bharath Singh-trained Jahzara (Western Aristocrat -Sunshine Girl) was given a peach of a ride by Antony Raj. After her earlier forward run over a mile, she was held behind the pacemaker Banksy till the top of the straight where she took over the running to win easily from a late finishing Balance who may have needed the run as she was running after a long lay-off.
The annual visitor from western India - Divine Thoughts - made good her light impost to win the sprint for the Cameron Handicap. Trainer Amal Altaf Hussain said the mare by Roderic O’Connor out of Thoughts of You had been a trifle unlucky at this centre thus far. On this occasion, jockey Saqlain allowed Kalahari Gold to set the early pace before taking over the running and winning well from a late-finishing Dali Swirl. The curtain came down with another western India import dominating the show. Adhiraj Singh Jodha -trained Winter Agenda (Win Legend -Integral) was given a thunderous ride by Trevor who had him in a good fourth position till the top of the straight where he took over the running to win comfortably from Salome.
