By Ikram Khan | 01 Jan 2025 | CHENNAI
Mr Chaduranga Kanthraj Urs and trainer Parvati Byramji leading Magnetic (P Trevor up), winner of The South India Oaks (Gr.2)
The Bengaluru raider Magnetic from trainer Parvati Byramji's yard emerged the best of her sex and age at Guindy, winning the South India Oaks in fine style. The in-form pro, Trevor Patel brilliantly piloted the filly in the `Ladies Derby' who finally realised her potential in a classic event after missing out on a couple of occasions to make the elite classic league.
In a small five-horse field, Magnetic after her impressive effort behind Emphatic in the South India 1000 Guineas run over a mile was considered a cinch taking into account that the extended mile-and-half trip suited her most and the fact that she in the past had creditably performed against higher rated rivals. The on-money favourite looked good in the paddock and with Trevor Patel, who is on a hot streak, guiding her fortunes, Magnetic looked all set to enter the classic circle. Well the Parvati ward didn't miss out on this golden opportunity, producing her best to sail home nice and easy to the delight of Parvati. The impressive winning effort, though against four mediocre rivals brought the smile back on the face of Parvati after African Gold's below par effort in the Indian 2000 Guineas at Mahalaxmi (Mumbai).
The local mainhope Mother's Grace from Suraj Shaw's yard partnered by Alex Rozario set a decent pace all through the gruelling 2400 metres trip before Trevor reminded Magnetic of the task ahead at the top of the straight and Magnetic superbly responding to her master's call unleashed a brilliant turn of foot to zip past the leader and register her maiden classic success. Another Bengaluru hopeful Aquastic finished third ahead of Grey Wind, while Skyward from the city of nawabs finished last..It was good to see Magnetic produce two consistently good efforts and that indicates that the Parvati trainee is now at her best after a series of blow-hot, bold cold performances in the past.
After his classic success, Trevor booted home the Vijay Singh schooled Amazing Joy to a thrilling victory in the upper division of the Natalama Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. The winner who had failed to justify favouritism in her last effort thanks to the lackadaisical effort of Hindu Singh produced a winning gallop in the hands of Trevor to edge out the 10 to one long shot Samachar, a `neck' separating the two at the wire. King's Gaurdian finished a creditable third and is one for the notebook.
In line for a hat-trick, Trevorf had it easy on another public choice Dramatic from Vijay Singh's yard. The winner who had impressed most while finishing second behind stablemate Straordinario in her last exercise over a mile came up tops in the reduced seven furlongs trip, powering home to win the lower division of the event and help punters sign off on a winning note. Royal Tapestry from Sebastian's yard followed the on-money favourite home, while Dakshin Vijay strongly tipped in place, managed to grab the third spot.
Earlier, the long shot Golden Warrior from the stables of champion trainer Deepesh Narredu reigned supreme in the Governor's Trophy edging out the second in demand at the betting ring, Starkova in the Governor's Trophy run over a distance of nine furlongs. Trevor astride the public choice Sassy hit the front and called the shots for most part of the trip before Sassy went out of gas at the all-important end and finished a tame third.
On the strength of his good third behind the winner Groovin and the runner-up Safety in her last essay, Sheer Elegance was rightly tipped to score in the Charenzaccio Handicap, but the mare after raising hopes at the top of the straight failed in her mission to earn her winning bracket, going down to the topweighted lesser fancied contestant Admiral Shaw from Sebastian's yard. The winner partnered by Inayat looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring before chalking out a long pending win. Illustrious Ruler finished third ahead of Empire Of Dreams, while Santamarina Star, it was clear was never in the hunt.
After Meadow Springs from the stables of James McKeown was withdrawn at the starting gates, it was clear that Vijay Singh will lead in the winner of the Sans Craintes Stud Million. Sir Winston making his debut showed a clean pair of heels to his much fancied stablemate Laguna Seca piloted by Trevor. Sir Winston in his start to finish winning exercise looked good and his progress in the weeks ahead will evoke interest.
On a day Vijay Singh dominated leading in four winners, Aarini recorded her second straight success coming up tops in the upper division of the Sha Tin Handicap run over the 1000 metres dash. The four to one shot piloted by Hindu Singh beat Words Worth, who in her effort to make every post a winning one lacked the gas in the tank to keep going in the final furlong and had to rest content with the runner-up berth.
In what was an open affair, Memory Lane fancied sweetly by the insiders and right connections edged out another leading contender War Emblem in a tight finish to take home the New Year Trophy. The winner piloted by MS Deora who replaced Peter produced a winning gallop at the all-important end to bring off a successful coup, while the favourite Rinello from Suresh's yard after hitting the front and raising hopes in the final furlong flattered to deceive, finishing a tame third.
