GUTSY SHOW BY CHARLIE IN KAILASHPAT SINGHANIA TROPHY
By Usman Rangila | 05 Jan 2025 | MUMBAI
Charlie (Bhawani Singh up), winner of The Kailashpat Singhania Trophy
The gallantry of the old war-horse Charlie against a younger lot fetched him the Kailashpat Singhania Trophy, Sunday's feature event run over seven furlongs. Better fancied than only Rambler in the six-horse field, sparingly-raced Charlie was turned out in top fettle for this showdown by his master Vinesh and the seven-year old dark bay didn't let him down. Neeraj Rawal-astride bottom-weighted Golden Glow, who shared the burden of the public's purse with Azrinaz, decided to cash in on his handicap when showing the way to the field after darting ahead from the gates. Azrinaz was in close attendance of the leader while Ataash and Charlie raced prominently behind the duo ahead. Golden Glow was forced into submission by Ataash in the last furlong even as A. Sandesh went into an overdrive aboard Azrinaz. Jockey Bhawani Singh meanwhile released the brakes on Charlie, whose acceleration saw him collar both Ataash and Azrinaz. Just when the last named had measured Ataash, Charlie (Planetaire – Miracle of Love) had picked up momentum and went striding clear in the last fifty metres. Azrinaz was a length behind the winner with Rambler and Singer Sargent both rallying late to finish in the third and fourth spot respectively.
Bhawani Singh completed a double when he steered Karthik Ganapathy-saddled The General to his first official win. Champagne Smile snatched the initial lead shortly after the start and surrendered it back with about two furlongs still left for home. Backed enthusiastically on this occasion, five-year old The General (Top Class – Hallelujah) came with a flying run when alerted by Bhawani and sped past Ariyana Star in the final furlong for a comfortable victory. Liam, after languishing at the wrong end of the field till they entered the straight, produced an eye-catching but late effort to take the runner-up berth ahead of another late-finishing contestant, Goomah. Cordelia, though racing prominently with the front bunch, failed to make headway and ended a poor fourth.
The piping hot favourite Surrealist from Pesi Shroff's stables lived up to the promise shown during her debut run and recorded a facile win, trouncing her six maiden rivals when lifting the Lt. Col. Govind Singh (VRC) Cup. Jockey G. Vivek atop Surrealist allowed A. Sandesh-ridden Ministry of Time to display her initial speed while waiting for the waiting for the opportunity to pounce on her adversary. Surrealist (Dali – Arashi) was still travelling on the bit when joining and cruising past Ministry of Time in the last furlong. Don Julio ended third ahead of Victorious Omen.
Pradeep Chouhan-groomed Ardakan defied the penalty incurred for his maiden success in Western India and stayed well over the nine-furlong trip for the Dr. I. C. Nagree Trophy to achieve an encore. Giant King showed a surprise improvement in his gate manners to call the early shots and led the five-horse field into the straight. As they approached the final turn, Sandesh got into his act aboard Ardakan, who ranged alongside Giant King as soon as they were homeward bound. Once Ardakan (Excellent Art – Desert Lightning) tackled the leader, Sandesh had his mount going under the whip to keep Booster Shot at bay. Booster Shot clearly came across one better and had to play second fiddle to the winner. Giant King finished faraway to be third while Bugatti failed to make his presence felt at any stage of the race and ran fourth.
Axlrod, who had taken a backseat in the race won by Mila two weeks ago, raced with a positive intent when taking toll of favourite Amadeo in the Ravishankar Gupta Salver. Behram Cama-schooled Axlrod raced close on the heels of Nelson River, who slipped into the lead from the barriers, and stepped up the pace to go surging ahead as soon as the heads turned for home. Having stolen a march over his rivals, Axlrod (Quasar – Shivalik Heroine) stretched out well to frustrate Amadeo, who tried to bridge the leeway in the last furlong only to find that the winner was a hard nut to crack. Axlrod inflicted a four-length defeat upon Amadeo whilst Ma Cherie came with a long-stretched run to finish third ahead of Nelson River.
A confident piece of riding from jockey S. Zervan enabled Beyond Stars to stave off Silver Braid over a mile and quarter trip in the day's opening event. Marlboro Man found himself in the front as none of his four rivals were inclined to head the field and was chased by Beyond Stars and Silver Braid all the way into the home stretch. The moment Neeraj Rawal switched lanes and brought Silver Braid into contention, Zervan pressed S. Waheed-trained Beyond Stars (Arazan – Retained) into the lead and drove him out in the last furlong to stay beyond Silver Braid's reach. Marlboro Man ran third whilst Leo The Lion and Willy Wonka followed him home.
The B. Prithviraj-trained filly Ananya struck immediately on relegation to the lowest class and went on to taste her maiden success in the concluding race. Rookie Aditya Waydande eased Ananya (Phoenix Tower – Glorious Light) got the filly swiftly off from the blocks and had her hugging the rails when showing out in the front. Lightning Blaze and Trillionaire tried intimidating Ananya opposite the stands but the young apprentice displayed remarkable resolve in driving her out for a narrow win. She was a separated by half-length from runner-up Lightning Blaze, who ended a nose ahead of High Heels with Superluminal a neck away. Favourite Trillionaire was one of the five contestants sent out by Narendra Lagad in the nine-horse field but he gave a dismal show when finishing behind his four stable companions.
