SCHNELL SHOCKS FIELD IN ARMY TROPHY
By Ikram Khan | 18 Jan 2025 | CHENNAI
After the Derby on Pongal day, form played truant on Saturday, only three favourites, Danny's Girl, Set In Gold and Charukala justifying the top billing, while the rest six took a back seat resulting in the followers of form taking a beating on Saturday.
A gutsy last start winner, Royal Defender from leading trainer Sebastian's yard and the advantageously placed in at the scales, Persian Rock from the stables of Fahad Khan garnered the maximum support in the Army Trophy, the plum run over a mile, but the two top fancies failed to display their true potential much to the disappointment of their supporters, the former failing to make the board, while Persian Rock only managed to save money in place, finishing a tame third behind the shock winner Schnell from Deepesh Narredu's yard and her stablemate Golden Warrior who gained the runner-up berth in the hands of Hindu Singh.
Hindu Singh who recorded a double, first guided home the even-money favourite Charukala before packing punch on the lesser fancied Agavai in the concluding event. A picture of fitness at the parade ring, Charukala, who was surprised by Silk Stuff in her last start over 1000 metres dash was again strongly fancied to score in the OTA Trophy run over a distance of seven furlongs taking into account that the extended trip suited her style. The well-backed favourite after being favourably placed at the top of the straight produced a winning gallop and put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. The topweighted King O Star piloted by Sai Kumar finished on purposefully at end to gain the runner-up berth ahead of Kings Return.
Astride the five to one shot Angavai from trainer Mandanna's yard in the lower division of the Navy Trophy, Hindu Singh produced his best, driving home the lesser fancied Mandanna ward to a thrilling victory, edging out another lesser fancied contestant Authentic Bell and the second in demand at the betting ring, Lady Luck close home. The favourite Abnegator from Uthiah's stable partnered by Gaurav Singh was also in the hunt till the final furlong before he retired from the fray much to the chagrin of the Ramanathan camp.
The upper division of the event was claimed by the second in demand at the betting ring, Grey Beauty from James McKeown's yard. The winner in the hands of leading pro Umesh produced a sparkling gallop approaching the distance post to take charge before putting the race to bed in the final 100 metres. The Vijay Singh-trained Sweet Legacy who finished second behind Rising Tycoon in the concluding event on the Derby-day again found one better in Grey Beauty and hopefully it will prove third time lucky for this consistent mare. Public choice Greeley from the stables of Suraj Shaw was seriously not in the business, never prominent in this six furlongs trip to make a mark and justify his top billing.
In what was a very open affair, War Emblem, who finished second behind Santamarina Star on Derby eve and Empire Of Dreams topped the betting board in the Police Trophy.
The Fazal-Ul-Rehman-trained Glock too was in the fancied lot, in with a definite chance to take the Police Trophy home. But none of the top three fancied contestants displayed the spunk and guts required to stand tall at the podium. The eight to one shot Sacre Couer from Ramanathan's yard piloted by five-kilo claimer N Darshan outclassed his 11 rivals to canter home in style. Maduva Thalaivi, another outsider followed the winner home ahead of Empire Of Dreams, while War Emblem only managed to make the frame.
The `Jodi' of Safety and Raffinato was touted as a safe bet in the upper division of the Air Force Trophy run over a distance of seven furlongs. But much to the disappointment and dejection of the followers of form it was not to be. The Saddam Iqbal schooled Sonic Dash in the hands of Faird Ansari sent the recommended `Jodi' out of the window the moment he produced a winning gallop and hit the high road. Alexander followed the smart winner home ahead of Kings Walk, while the top two fancies failed to even save money in place.
The lower division of the event was claimed by the hotly supported favourite Danny's Girl who made every post a winning one in the hands of MS Deora. Prince Purple tipped by the Suresh camp to upset the applecart of the public choice found the `Girl' too hot to handle and had to rest content with the runner-up berth. Wisaka finished on gamely to take the third spot ahead of Empress Royal who was fancied sweetly in place by the insiders and right connections of trainer Rupa.
The Deepesh Narredu-trained Set In Gold, who was fancied to make a winning debut before he flopped and finished a tame third in his first career start did well to shed his maiden status in his second appearance, donkey-licking his six rivals in the juvenile event run over a sprint. The winner on the strength of this brilliant effort is certain to make his presence felt against the best of the juveniles in the campus. Seina made a satisfactory debut, finishing second ahead of Roxxane who has not improved with a run under his belt.
