Brown Sugar comes good

Brown Sugar (Ms Silva up) winner of the Chief Minister's Trophy being led in by owners Mr. Shailesh Shivaswamy, Mr. Sanjay, Mr. Prasad Reddy, Mr. Satisg Gowda & trainer Mr. Irfan Ghatala

Brown Sugar recorded a gusty win over Obligado in the 2000 metres Chief Minister’s Trophy, a terms race for four-year olds and over which was the highlight of races held on Saturday. What was significant about the win, apart from the controversial handling last time out by its pilot, was the remarkable recovery shown by the son of Serious Spender from a tendon injury. Now that he has run three races and stayed sound, he could be trusted to have a say in the terms races. The race set at rest once and for all that Spectacular Quest, who was returning after a setback, is at his best only up to mile and the longer trips will sort out his limitations. Brown Sugar who was handily placed at the top of the straight, surged ahead when the race was on the boil and held on gallantly even as Obligado came with a threatening run. The absence from the track for a longish period perhaps put paid to Obligado’s hope as he fell short at the end. Spark of Glory ran to finish third. Malesh Narredu who used the whip in excess of the prescribed limit was suspended for two race days as this was the third offence and the next would mean he would lose the whip for the remainder of the season. The run benefit brought about a remarkable transformation in Holding Court who won the Karnataka Racehorse Owners Association Trophy, a terms race for three-year olds, with a start to finish dash. The son of Royal Kingdom proved too good as he stretched away from the opposition. Star Force, who was expected to be a force to reckon with, was not spotted. Five-year old mare Tunisia won the Dr S K Pillay Memorial Plate (Div I), from end to end, with Baracudda’s valiant effort going in vain. Fancied Royal Affinity is yet to strike the form which had marked her out as a classic prospect and her problems haven’t been sorted out. Red Mamma was more fancied than Tunisia to win but the result did not go against the universal belief that horses trained by Irfan Ghatala will not win if a top jockey is declared. The record has remained intact for the last decade. The lower division of the race went the way of Tashann who won at the expense of Inquisitive who flashed home rather late. Favourite Lusitania ran below par. Sunlight King was another whose defeat was not expected. Backed to the exclusion of his rivals, Sunlight King was put in the shade as the lesser fancied Forever Grande gave a bold show. In the day’s other action, Goli Master brought off a big upset even as strongly favoured Garuda put up a pathetic show. There was at least one person who would have been overjoyed by the result and that was trainer Satish Narredu who had struggled hard for his maiden winner this season.
