SHINE WINS MADRAS GOLD VASE

By Ikram Khan | 03 Feb 2025 | CHENNAI

Back after firing a blank during the Derby week-end at Mahalaxmi (Mumbai), top gun Suraj Narredu recorded a grand treble, including his victory on the Vijay Singh-trained Shine in  the plum event, the Madras Gold Vase run over a distance of seven furlongs at Guindy in Chennai on Monday. A smart debut winner, Shine was up against the hot Bengaluru raider Perfect Attitude from Arjun Manglorkar's yard, who in his first career start had beaten Prokofiev, the winner of the Sir Homi Mehta Breeders' Produce Stakes in Mumbai on Derby-day. The talented juvenile ready for the big battle produced another brilliant performance, outclassing his five rivals in the hands of Suraj, while sending out a strong message that she is one of the top youngsters in the Guindy campus, who has the required potential to stake her claim against the best from the other premium racing centres. The public rage Perfect Attitude never really settled in the race and half-way from home, it was clear that the short-priced on-money favourite would fail in her mission to bag the Gold Vase. Perfect Attitude finished a poor fourth behind the Rakesh-trained Mysuru hopeful Pretty Move, while Northern Waves from the city of Charminaf gained the runner-up; berth.

Next in  the principal added attraction, the Chief Justice Trophy, Suraj booted home Glorious King, back to his winning ways after failing to match strides with the two Bengvaluru stars Shamrock and Prana on Pongal day. Suraj settled the `King' nice and easy all through the backstretch before he reminded the public choice of the task ahead at the top of the straight and Glorious King responding gamely to his master's call produced a winning gallop to assume command before gallantly pegging back the belated effort of the Fahad Khan schooled Still I Rise. The runner-up in defeat was not disgraced and lives to fight another day.

Earlier, Suraj partnered another good youngster Echoes Of Time from Vijay Singh's yard, who made a smashing debut, winning the G Kasturi Memorial Trophy in resplendent style. The winner was fancied sweetly by the insiders and right connections from the Vijay Singh camp and Echoes Of Time justified the support in style romping home without breaking a sweat. Akitania from James McKeown's yard, another debutant followed the smart winner home ahead of Star Aristocracy, while Chief Admiral after calling the shots till the straight found the three top finishers too hot to handle. Echoes Of Time is a goodtype of youngster and this colt appears better than the stablemate Shine.

In what was a very open affair, Empire Of Dreams from the stables of Suraj Shaw was the favourite in the opening event, the Dubawi Handicap run over a sprint, but the public choice met a tartar in Presto Power who in the hands of apprentice N Darshan powered through to earn his winning bracket. The Rebel, a long shot from Mandanna's yard finished a creditable third ahead of Aletta who lacks the willingness to make an impression even in the lowest class.

On the strength of her impressive last start effort, second behind Sovereign Spirit in her last start, the topweighted Magical Bay from Suraj Shaw's yard was fancied most in the Deep Impact Handicap run over a sprint, but the overwhelming favourite failed to reproduce her last effort and finished a tame third behind the five to one shot Emperor Vikram from Sebastian's yard and the runner-up Impiana from the stables of James.

The Ajith Kumar-trained Alexander opened the favourite in the upper division of the Madras Race Horse Association Trophy, but soon truck loads of money came pouring on last start winner Danny's Girl from Suraj Shaw's yard. The strongly supported public choice partnered by MS Deora hit the front soon after the field of eight runners came under the starter's flag before surrendering the advantage approaching the distance post, At this juncture, rank outsider Lady Wonder from B Suresh's yard streaked ahead and with her pilot Kabdhar in no mood to let the advantage slip, gamely held on and pegged back the belated challenge of stablemate Multicrown by the shortest of margins. Danny's Girl was the third favourite from Suraj Shaw's yard who flopped on the day, the trainer only leading in seven winners from his big list of 121 runners so far this season. The lower division of the event was claimed by the second in demand at the betting ring, Relic Warrior piloted by Farid Ansari. The winner in a thriller edged out the topweighted Seeking The Stars, another runner from Suraj Shaw's stable. Suresh schooled Royal Chivalry was fancied most in place and the game galloper did well to finish third ahead of Aarini.

The Ramanathan schooled Blue Eyed Boy and Dramatic from  Vijay Singh's stable topped the betting board in the concluding event, the Frankel Handicap before Blue Eyed Boy at end was the firm favourite and the fancied `Big Boy' justified the confidence of his supporters producing a winning gallop at the all-important end to score from the topweighted Illustrious Ruler, who at one stage looked set to score before Koshi Kumar packed punch on the favourite to overhaul the leader close home.
