Trainer S S Attaollahi leading Sicyon (P Trevor up), winner of The Maj. C. Newton-Davis Memorial Trophy
After the Invitation Cup hungama, the Bangalore Turf Club did well to frame a eight-event card and the results obtained made it clear that the railbirds didn't really have the better of exchanges, but yet managed to return home evens-stevens. Four firm favourites and a solitary second fancy Finley, entered the winners' circle, while the two heavily backed on-money favourites, Jersey King from Dominic's yard in the opener and the Sulaiman Attaollahi-trained Lux Aeterna in the concluding event, both piloted by top pro Suraj Narredu bit the dust.
The consistent Jersey King, who has successfully matched strides with some of the good sprinters at this campus rightly garnered the maximum support in the Koyna Plate run over a sprint, but the on-money favourite, who had finished third behind Masato, who finished third in the Sprinters' Cup won by Time And Tide and the runner-up Ricardo, who chalked out a facile victory on the Invitation Cup day, failed to perform to the best of his ability and went down tamely to the in-form Metzinger from the stables of Rajesh Babu partnered by leading pro Akshay Kumar, who maintains his three win advantage against Trevor Patel in the race for the Champion Jockey crown. Second in demand at the betting ring, Auspicious Queen also found Metzinger too hot to handle in a sprint which the mare doesn't really relish.
Spurred by the success in the opening event, Akshay Kumar made every post a winning one on the Faraz Arshad schooled Super Hero in the Raichur Plate run over a mile. The winner fancied most in the big field of 11 runners looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring before hitting the front and providing Akshay an easy ride to success. Royal Whisper followed the winner home ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring, Southernaristocrat from the stables of Kishan Thomas.
Second behind the run-away winner Felisa in her last start, the seven-year-old Domina from Inayathullah's yard was fancied most in the lower division of the Mahadayi Plate, backed down from (2/1) to 11/10) and the top fancy produced a quality effort in the hands of Jagadeesh to romp home, sparing five lengths to the runner-up Silver Swift and the third-placed Baltimore, who caught the eye, finishing on purposefully at end in the hands of an inexperienced four-kilo claimer Asirvatham.
Jagadeesh cornered glory In the upper division of the event too, booting home the 15 to one long shot Double Vision from Shoban Babu's yard who edged out another outsider Super King in a humdinger. The Dominic-trained Smile Of Beauty opened the favourite, but soon the price on the `Beauty' kept going up and up and the few wise punters smelling a rat chose to stay away, while a majority of the rest got into the boat of Vayu who was thumped in the betting ring, backed down to (5/2) from (9/2). The Joseph Awale gamble flopped badly, Vayu finishing down the field, while Smile Of Beauty also failed to even save money in place. The Arjun Manglorkar schooled Ebotse in his attempt to make every post a winning one lost out in the final furlong, but yet managed to finish third to the delight of his supporters who fancied him strongly in place.
Failing to break ice on more than a couple of occasions, the Purshotham-trained Knotty Patton, who had finished a game second behind Metzinger, a smart winner in the opening event in the higher category in his last essay, was rightly smashed down from (13/10) to (8/10) in the Adichunchanagiri Plate run over a sprint and the strongly supported favourite to the delight of the followers of form produced a sparkling gallop in the final furlong to overhaul Aherne and earn his long pending cornbill. Lesser fancied Springsteen finished third ahead of Southern Force. Now that Knotty Patton has entered the winners' circle, the old at tooth eight-year-old can be fancied to add another win before the curtains are drawn this winter.
The Sulaiman Attaollahi-trained Sicyon made a smashing debut providing leading pro Trevor Patel, who booted home Knotty Patton, an arm-chair ride to success in the Maj.C Newton Davis Memorial Trophy, donkey-licking her nine rivals including the second in demand at the betting ring, Moon Star who had finished fourth, twice from her two starts. Darrington from the stables of Irfan Ghatala too made a favourable impression gaining the runner-up spot ahead of Moonstar. The winner appears to be a goodtype of youngster and more will be heard of him in summer.
Last start winner, Power Of Beauty from the stables of Pradeep Annaiah gained the top billing in the PV Shetty Memorial Trophy, but the overwhelming public choice found the second fancy Finley from Sulaiman's yard too hot to handle and had to settle for the runner-up berth. Advantageously placed in at the scales, Scarlette Lady from Prasanna Kumar's yard finished a suggestive third ahead of Crosswater who found the first three much superior and more importantly, the Arjun trainee was giving 7.5 kilos to Scarlette Lady. Though Arjun put up a four-kilo apprentice Alemuddin, it didn't make a difference, the topweight only managing to make the board.
After leading in two winners, Sulaiman looked set to record a treble through the public rage Lux Aeterna competing in the concluding event, the Red Fort Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. But to the disappointment of Sulaiman and a majority of punters, the script went wrong and the Md. Sajid schooled Carter, it was who upset the applecart of the top fancy after a ding-dong battle in the final furlong. Rayan Ahmed astride the shock winner produced his best and all credit to Sajid for sending out Carter in fine shape. Now that this trainer has opened his account here, he appears ready to make an impression at this big centre if a couple of new owners support him in his exercise to lead in more in the months ahead. The fact that Sajid chose to shun the sprint trips and provide Carter a chance in a extended trip brought home the desired result and full marks to Sajid for bringing about the winning change.
