By Ikram Khan | 23 Mar 2025 | CHENNAI
Trainer Deepesh Narredu and Jockey Yash Narredu champions of the season at Madras Race Club
Brothers Deepesh and Yash Narredu again emerged champs, the former leading in 31 winners, while Yash booted home 28 at the end of the season at Guindy. It is learnt that the mandarins of the Madras Race Club (MRC) have negotiated with the government to continue racing at Guindy for one more year before the pros move out for a couple of years to other centres and hopefully return after the new race course is built on the promised 150-acre land at Hosur. The fact that MRC has gained a one-year extension has provided the professionals at this centre the relief knowing that they can race their wards without the immediate closure threat and the racing buffs at Guindy are also pleased understanding that all is not lost though the Ooty Race Club is a closed chapter.
Back to final extra-day's racing on Sunday, the two leading trainers Robert Foley and B Suresh recorded a double. Robert entered only two runners, King's Guardian and last start winner Illustrious Ruler and both came up trumps to the delight of the seasoned pro, while Suresh struck it rich through Brook Magic and Multiwave.
The Sebastian schooled Aviothic on the strength of his suggestive effort in his last essay, second behind Glorious Evensong was fancied most in the opening event, the lower division of the Cosmos Handicap run over a sprint and the public choice confidently piloted by MS Deora produced a winning gallop to earn his winning bracket after seven attempts this season. Maranello from Mandanna's yard followed the winner home ahead of the lesser fancied Princess O Star, while Forest Lake completed the frame.
After the successful start, punters looking to make the moolah on the final day chose to go with the strongly fancied favourite Aquila from Mandanna's yard in the next event, the upper division of the Cosmos Handicap and paid the price, the public choice piloted by Umesh finishing a tame third behind the runner-up Jack Richer from Uthaiah yard, while the four to one shot Brook Magic from B Suresh's yard comfortably made every post a winning one in the hands of the promising five-kilo claimer Ritesh Gochhi. The winner like Aviothic earned her cornbill in her eighth attempt this season and that helped Suresh who led in two winners finish second behind Deepesh, edging out Vijay Singh by a solitary point.
Losing out in the second event, the railbirds in the Imperial Scholar Handicap chose to go with the two top fancies, King's Guardian from the stables of Robert Foley and the Vijay Singh schooled Dramatic and they were rewarded, King's Guardian romping home without raising a sweat in the hands of Farid Ansari, while Dramatic followed the winner home. Farid to the delight of the Robert camp produced a copybook effort on King's Guardian, tracking the leader Arikattu for most part of the mile long trip before he setalight the favourite at the top of the straight and the winner responding gamely to his master's call zipped past Arikattu and put the race to bed even before Dramatic and Hindu Singh could change gears. Arikattu gamely held on to save money in place while Gold Fame continued to disappoint failing to make the board.
The lower division of the Queen Town Handicap produced a shock winner, Aarini from Vijay Singh's yard partnered by Hindu Singh pegging back the belated challenge of the favourite Prince Purple and the second in demand at the betting ring, Magical Bay who received a check and lost position early on in the 1100 metres dash from which he never recovered and finished a tame third in the hands of the talented Mukesh Kumar from Hyderabad. The upper division of the event was claimed by another seven to one shot Multiwave who made every post a winning one in the hands of Shah Alam. The James McKeown schooled Suryakrishi garnered the maximum support in this event, but the top choice after failing to gain a favourable position at the start finished on purposefully at end only to finish a poor third behind the runner-up Emperor Vikram.
In what appeared a very open race, Royal Defender from Sebastian's yard, Mother's Grace from the stables of Suraj Shaw, a smart last start winner, Rays Of Sun under the care of Krishna and the Fahad Khan-trained King's Battalion topped the betting board before Royal Defender ended the favourite, marginally ahead of Mother's Grace. Well this time out the Suraj Shaw and Mukesh Kumar combination which had blotted the book in the fourth race came good to the delight of their followers, Mother's Grace edging out rank outsider Ruling Star at the shadow of the winning post. Royal Defender and Rays Of Sun performed below par, while King's Battalion shockingly finished last.
The lower division of the event saw last start winner Illustrious Ruler produce another winning effort to record his second straight success. Ignored in the betting ring despite his good effort in the lower class, Illustrious Ruler made another start to finish effort to floor the followers of form pegging back another last start winner Rise Again who like Illustrious Ruler was not in the list of the punters, who chose to pin their hopes on Rise Again's stablemate Persian Rock from the stables of Fahad Khan. The favourite much to the chagrin of his supporters failed to display his true potential and finished in the ruck. Golden Legend from Suraj Shaw's yard too had his fair share of supporters but all he could do was only save money in place, finishing third behind Rise Again.
With the punters looking to finish the season on a winning note, War Emblem and Maduvaa Thalaivi were the two preferred choices in the final event of the season, the Adamile Handicap and the "Jodi' to the delight of the bookies went out of the window, the moment Alex Rozario packed punch on the 12/1 long shot Wood Art.who outclassed her 11 rivals, sparing more than four lengths to the runner-up Off Shore Breeze, while the game War Emblem managed to finish third.
