It was sheer negligence. And leading trainer Satish Narredu admitted it without making any excuses or passing the buck. The embarrassed trainer disclosed that a simple miscalculation in the days and dates changed following Bangalore Turf Club's decision to announce the routine acceptances a day later led to the controversy, which resulted in seven horses from the stables of Satish Narredu and his son Rajesh Narredu not permitted to race on Saturday. 

Satish Narredu disclosed that all the seven horses under the care of Narredus were administered pick-ups by the duty veterinary doctors at the club's hospital on Thursday. following the request made by the Narredus.  "It was only ringers and vitamins which are commonly injected which help in the conditioning of the horses and it is a normal practice. But the mistake which we made was that we forgot that acceptances were made on Thursday this week following the wait and watch approach of the BTC, who were monitoring the rain forecasts all through the week," said Satish. The fact that all the seven horses listed to race on Saturday were medically treated on Thursday, they simply could not be allowed to race on Saturday, not able to complete the statutory 72-hour period.

The Narredus understandably got a lot of flak and questions were also posed to the men and women vets performing in robotic fashion rather than studying, understanding and executing the treatment desired responsibly. Well in this case it is clear that the two trainers were at fault and not the woman who delivered the dose.

After the seven horses were not allowed to race what action did the BTC take is what the racing fraternity wants to know. Well it is learnt that the Club has instructed the veterinary department to draw blood samples from all the seven horses which will be tested and in addition have imposed a penalty, Rs 25,000 fine on each horse. "Well it was a serious mistake. But we understand that no malafide intention is involved. In any case we will wait for the result of the test before clearing the two trainers," said BTC chairman Manjunath Ramesh adding that if a negative result is obtained the club will crack the whip without any fear or favour.

Meanwhile at the managing committee meeting held on Friday, the trainers withdrew their complaint made against committee member Dayanand Mandre. and amicably settled what was heading to snow-ball into a big issue. It maybe recalled that the Karnataka Trainers Association (KTA) had written a letter to the chairman of the club pointing out that Dayand Mandre was continuously harassing and making derogatory remarks, holding threats and maligning the reputation of the members of KTA.The trainers in addition pointed out that the committee member had made serious allegations that the trainers are joining together and fixing races, which are baseless and that the committee member had allegedly accused four trainers, KTA president Pradeeo Annaiah, champion trainer Prasanna Kumar, veteran schooler Warren Singh and leading trainer Satish Narredu as benami trainers in an official managing committee meeting.  The trainers also made no secret of their opinion that all this was done by Dayanand following KTA's refusal to sponsor a race in winter and the decision of KTA not to participate in a cricket tournament he conducted following his bad behaviour with the members of KTA.

Responding to the complaint Dayanand Mandre made it clear that no pressure was put to obtain sponsorship of race from KTA nor did he hold any threat. The committee member revealed that a lot of horses from one stable were entering the rings of others during the morning trials and this raised questions on integrity. The committee member, it is learnt also suggested to the club to place cameras on all rings to ascertain and monitor the activity of horses in the morning. The committee member painted black in the written complaint, made it clear that the complaint was false while seeking a proper explanation from trainers and holding the trainers responsible for the hara-kiri. Well wiser counsel prevailed and the contentious issue was amicably resolved.
