The newly formed Asia team won a thrilling renewal of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup as they narrowly defeated Europe by just one point.

Victories for leading Indian jockey Suraj Narredu and star Japanese rider Ryusei Sakai helped them to a total of 68 points, giving Asia victory in their first year as a team in the competition.

Fireblade was captain Narredu’s winner in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers under a brilliant ride in the two-mile contest for trainer Dylan Cunha.

Their second win came in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint as Marco Botti’s Prince Of India battled gamely to give Sakai a memorable first trip to Ascot.

The Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle, awarded to the jockey that accumulates the most points, went to the experienced Hugh Bowman who put his course experience to good use aboard Vintage Clarets in the opening Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash.

Favourite backers were rewarded in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge as Great Britain and Ireland gained valuable points when Night Breeze came home best for jockey Robbie Dolan and trainer Ian Williams.

The penultimate contest gave Europe their first success on the day, as William Haggas’s Tenability battled bravely under the equally tenacious Delphine Santiago to land the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Classic.

The concluding and most valuable race on the card went to team Europe, as Per-Anders Graberg delivered Ebt’s Guard excellently for William Muir and Chris Grassick in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile. The result propelled Europe to 67 points, but it wasn’t enough to catch team Asia.
