By Epsom Ace | 10 Sep 2025 | KOLKATA
Mrs Menaka Gupta, Mr Marthand Singh Mahindra and trainer Aashay Doctor leaidng Pantazi (P Trevor up), winner of The Calcutta Colts Trial Stakes
The Calcutta Colts Trial Stakes run on Wednesday turned out to be a one horse race as the Aashay Doctor -trained big boned bay Pantazi (Western Aristocrat – Waveband) made the seven-furlong event a start to finish affair in a canter – that too in remarkable timing. The expected challenge from the Mysore Colts Trial winner Gold Empire did not materialise and the latter ended up a very poor last of four runners.
Jockey Trevor, who enjoyed an armchair ride on the winner completed a quartet of wins in the very next race when he brought Patrick Quinn-trained Dubai Princess (Gusto – Whistling Strait) with a flourish from the rear of the field to land the spoils in The Stewards Cup. The talented filly missed the jump by a couple of lengths but Trevor was unperturbed as he allowed her to settle in the rear before making his move in the straight. Quinn said later that his filly is improving with each run and the real test will be when she comes up against Trakila. “Right now, we plan to give her a bit of a rest which she has earned.”
Trevor set the ball rolling for himself with Deepesh Narredu-trained filly Heart (Gusto – Beldon Hill) who carried top weight to a facile triumph in the 1800 metres race for The Arezzo Handicap. It was an impressive show which brings the filly into reckoning for the Monsoon Derby and the Winter Oaks.
His second win of the day came in the 2000 metres race for The Exception Handicap while astride Arti Doctor-trained filly Main Street (Gusto – Mykonos) who defied the 4kg penalty and got the better of Great Guns after a keen tussle in the straight. Trevor seems to have an affinity for the filly as he has won on all three occasions he has ridden her. She had a bad season last winter when she lost a race or two in a manner which lefther connections and punters perplexed.
The afternoon belonged to Trevor and punters alike as several public choices obliged from the word go. In the opening event – The Immaculate Handicap- Sabeel Shariff-trained City Of Joy (Whatsthescript – Kalmana) made every post a winning one in the hands of Vishal Bunde.
The upper division of The Sunrise Handicap saw Imran Chisty at his best as he piloted Rutherford Alford-trained seven-year-old Celtic Harlequin (Western Aristocrat – Portia) to a rip roaring victory over Mathangi who threatened to see the winning post first. The lower division of the same race saw the favourite Trillionaire succumb to Aashay Doctor-trained Cat Whiskers (Western Aristocrat – Jack In the Cat) with Vaibhav in the saddle.
