RCTC FRAMES BUMPER CARD FOR DERBY DAY
By Epsom Ace | 27 Sep 2025 | KOLKATA
The Royal Calcutta Turf Club has well and truly surpassed itself with a bumper card of eleven races framed for Sunday. One cannot recall such a splendid and competitive card on a monsoon afternoon. That is quite a compliment for the current team at RCTC considering that this correspondent has been in the game for nearly half a century. The season’s blue riband - The Calcutta Monsoon Derby – a Grade II affair – carries a prize money of over Rs 55 lakh and a winner’s purse of over Rs 33 lakh. The supporting event, The Monsoon Cup, offers nearly Rs 19 lakh in prize money and over Rs 9lakh for the winner.
Vice -President RCTC Amit Chaturvedi, had a message for the professionals at this centre : “ It’s highly commendable for our trainers to have provided such a fabulous card for Derby Day. They are the ones who have stood strong at RCTC through the testing times. We have some very good races for the day and we are sure our patrons will have an enjoyable Sunday afternoon at the races.”
The plum of the season – The Monsoon Derby to be run over a mile and a quarter – has a dozen well-bred runners in the fray – four geldings, two colts and six fillies. The battle of sexes seems evenly poised for a thunderous climax to an otherwise brief yet successful season. The Monsoon Cup – also to be run over an identical distance, has six runners in contention with an average rating of over 100. Thus, patrons are likely to witness racing of a very high standard on this day, making for a memorable afternoon at the races! Ensure your presence in the stands to witness the birth of a ne w Derby winner and history being written.
