FOURTH WING WINS FILLIES TRIALS STAKES

By Ikram Khan | 10 Oct 2025 | CHENNAI

Mr Ritvik Devgan, Mr Waahiid Ali Khan, Mr Anil Saraf & trainer Aman Hussain leading Fourth Wing (Suraj Narredu up), winner of The Coromandel Gromor Fillies Trial Stakes

Last week at Guindy, three Bengaluru challengers, two from the stables of Sulaiman Attaollahi, Don Carlos and Efficacy and Maana from Darius Byramji's yard won three of the six events, this Friday four outstation horses dominated, including the Mumbai hopeful Fourth Wing from Aman Hussain's yard, the winner of the first classic of the season, the Coromandel Gromor Fillies Trial Stakes.

On the strength of her satisfactory performance in the Mysore 1000 Guineas, finishing a creditable fourth behind the winner Ravishing Beauty, second placed Indian Brocade, who finished ahead of the overwhelming favourite Miracle Star, Fourth Wing piloted by top pro Suraj Narredu on form was head and shoulders above her five rivals and the fact that this classic was run over a distance of seven furlongs suited the Aman Hussain filly the most. Suraj in no hurry and realising that he was astride the best filly in the contest tracked the front runner Mutual Trust for most part of the trip before streaking ahead and gaining control approaching the distance post. The Arjun Manglorkar schooled Perfect Attitude at this juncture stormed up to pose a threat, but the moment Suraj, travelling double-hand full, let Fourth Wing go, it was all over bar the shouting, the on-money favourite cruising home to register her maiden classic success in style. Perfect Attitude hung on to gain the runner-up berth ahead of the Hyderabad hopeful Star Of Opera, while the local filly Dubai Touch completed the frame.

Aman Hussain and Fourth Wing apart, Bengaluru champion Prasanna Kumar recorded a treble through the two money-back favourites Refreshment and Charismatic and the six to one shot Thessalian, winner of the Delage Handicap run over a sprint. The lesser fancied contestant partnered by Vinod Shinde produced good turn of foot in the `run in' home to upset the applecart of the two top fancies, Doncaster Belle from Darius Byramji's yard and the second in demand at the betting ring, Dynamic Force from the stables of Joseph Awale. Both Darius and Joseph after losing out in Mysuru on Thursday, the top fancy Power Of Gold from Darius' yard failing to even save money in place and the even-money favourite Vayu under the care of Joseph going down to Klimt, were looking to turn the tide at Guindy the next day, but sadly that didn't happen, the on-money favourite Doncaster Belle finishing a poor fourth, while the Joseph-trained Dynamic Force found the winner Thessalian and the runner-up Cynosure too hot to handle.

Refreshment and Charismatic had no opposition worthy of mention in their races. The former competing in the Super Brave Handicap run over a mile provided the top saddle artiste Antony Raj, who has made winning a habit, be it Mysuru, Mumbai or Chennai, an arm-chair ride to success. Absolute Katrina in her attempt to make every post a winning one held on gamely to gain money in place, edging out Thrill Of Brazil, a `neck' separating the two at the wire. The bred in the purple Refreshment appears in good nick and is set to provide an encore.

Classic hopeful Charismatic like Refreshment didn't need to break sweat, winning the concluding event, the Bugs Bunny Handicap run over a mile in resplendent style. Antony again had it easy powering through without unduly extending his mount, who after this effort will stake claim in a couple of major events in the month  ahead. Booster Shot after a couple of below par efforts, it appears is slowly regaining his form and zest for racing. The runner-up, who has joined Rajesh Narredu's string finished second ahead of Grenoble from the stables of Vijay Singh, who is yet to open his account this season.

Last start winner Shibra from Zulqarnain's yard chalked out her second straight win, coming up tops in the Adler Handicap run over a sprint. Akshay Kumar guiding the fortunes of the on-money favourite pushed the speedy Shibra to the front the moment the nine runners came under the starter's flag and the in-form filly never let the initiative slip romping home by more than five lengths. The Zulqarnain trainee on the strength of this superb effort is set to complete a hat-trick of wins when saddled next. Noorie from Deepesh Narredu's yard finished second ahead of Supreme Royalty, who is likely to earn her winning bracket over an extended trip.

The 15 to one shot Clean Slate floored the followers of form in the opening event. The Krishna schooled five-year-old mare, who had recorded a shock win in the opening race of the season again shocked the railbirds snuffing out the challenge of the five to one shot Royal Tapestry. The two top fancies, Flourish from Ajith Kumar's yard and the Suresh-trained Saintly Star performed below par, the former finishing a tame third, while Saintly Star to the disappointment of his supporters finished down the field.
