SEA THE SUN WINS GOVERNOR’S CUP

Trainer Joseph Awale recieving the Governor's Cup from MRC Chairman, G Venkatesh after Sea The Sun won the plum event

After booting home the short-priced favourite Meropi without breaking a sweat in the Dasara Sprint Championship on Thursday, Trevor Patel failed in his endeavour to guide home another hot favourite Magnetic in the Governor's Cup, the next day. The topweighted filly after travelling well for most part of the 10 furlongs trip briefly headed the leader Sea The Sun approaching the distance post and before his supporters started to count the money coming in, Sea The Sun in the hands of Sai Kiran regained the initiative in the final furlong and powered home much to the chagrin of the followers of form, who had nominated Magnetic a `banker' in the five-horse Jackpot puzzle and a dash and cash cheque in the final plum before the final week-end of the season.

Sai pushed Sea The Sun to the front and in his customary free-running style, the four to one shot dictated the pace all through the backstretch before Magnetic and Trevor stormed up and briefly headed the small field of five runners approaching the distance post before the overwhelming on-money favourite, it appeared went out of gas in the final furlong and had to rest content with the runner-up berth. The Hyderabad challenger Freedom Of Touch finished third ahead of the local nohoper Saigon, who finished ahead of the Sulaiman Attaollahi-trained Mescalito only because the Sulaiman ward lost more than 10 lengths at the start.

The principal added attraction, the AR Subramanya Raj Urs Memorial Trophy run over a sprint  saw the topweighted Gold Kite from the stables of Aditya and the Majid Khan-trained Grizzly garner maximum support. The `Jodi' was touted safe by both the pundits and the big betting syndicates. But in this game, nothing is safe and many past the post forecasts have only taken sacks of money down the drain. This happened again and all the big bettors were floored, the moment the five-kilo claimer Prabhu in a never-say-die bid, riding only hands and heels got the better off the seasoned Imran Chisty astride Gold Kite to upset the applecart of the two hot fancied contestants. Grizzly partnered by Afsar Khan finished a tame third and it will do a world of good if one ignores this Majid Khan ward until he regains his winning touch which will take a while taking into account that he is not the same old Grizzly one got to see a couple of winters ago. The Vishesh Naik-trained Winter Agenda, who was tipped to gain the top billing in this event opted out, while the Ruban schooled Serrano, it was clear was never in the hunt, happily racing behind the winner Absolutechallenger for most part of the trip before quickly retiring.from the fray.

Trainer Azhar Ali brought off a successful coup in the concluding event, the BVL-Round Table India Cup, D Fronx from his yard making every post a winning one while cantering home by a widening margin of eight lengths. The smart winner piloted by Salman Khan was offered at (7/1) at the start before the connections of D Fronx went bang-bang in the betting ring and soon the price on the topweight was cut by half, (7/2) before the big field of dozen runners came under the starter's flag for the seven furlongs exercise. The Faraz Arshad schooled El Alamein was the top fancy closing at (2/1), but he found D Fronx too hot to handle and had to rest content with the runner-up berth. Now That D Fronx has tasted success after joining Azhar's string, he is tipped to again score when next saddled in the forthcoming Bangalore winter season.

The well-backed Drisana on the strength of her impressive second behind the talented Pretty Move on the opening day of the season justified her top ranking in the K Thammanna Gowda Memorial Trophy run over a sprint. Anil Banadal guiding the fortunes of the Jaishankar Pillay's yard was cool and composed racing the mare in mid-division before he packed punch at the distance post and Drisana responding brilliantly to her master's call stormed up to snuff out the challenge of Creative Girl close home. To Hot To Touch piloted by apprentice jockey Suhas in her attempt to win from end to end lacked the steam, but nevertheless hung on gamely to save money in place for her supporters.. Creative Girl must consider herself a trifle unlucky taking into account that she pulled up lame, right fore, close home.

Leading saddle artiste Suraj Narredu recorded a popular short-priced double, booting home the two hot favourites, Star Studded and Immortal Beauty. The former shed his maiden status, coming up trumps in the Alekona Trophy run over a mile, while Immortal Beauty proved too good in the opening event, the Lalithmahal Plate run over 1100M dash. Striking Eyes followed Immortal Beauty in the opener, while Tigerking gained the runner-up berth in the Alekona Trophy.

The ten to one long shot City Of Hustle, advantageously placed in at the scales stunned the followers of form in the BVL-Ladies Circle India Cup upsetting the applecart of the second in demand at the betting ring Pearl Of Mysore and the top fancy Jannat, who failed to save even money in place. The winner piloted by Hindu Singh appears in good nick and is set to score again if her connections exploit her early in winter.
