SHAMROCK WINS FEATURE IN A THRILLER

By Ikram Khan | 25 Oct 2025 | MYSORE

Mr M Ravi and trainer Satish Narredu leading Shamrock (Suraj Narredu up), winner of The Mysore Race Club Anniversary Cup

Punters lost out on the eve of the blue riband of the season, the Mysore Derby, only two favourites justifying their top billing, while the rest of the half-dozen other fancied stars, for more reasons than one failed in their attempt to perform on par, much to the disappointment of the railbirds, who followed the book of form and ended up losing their shirts. The half-money favourite Siege Courageous went down by the shortest of margins in the Mysore Race Club Anniversary Cup, thanks to the over confident effort of his top pilot Antony Raj, which cost the big punters dear. Antony, not favourably placed in the seven furlongs event made no effort to improve his position and at end asked his mount to climb a mountain. The courageous Siege Courageous accepted the challenge and produced his best only to go down by the shortest of margins. While Antony botched up a race which he should have easily won, top gun Suraj Narredu produced a sublime effort on the lesser fancied Shamrock, positioning him in striking distance all through the seven furlongs journey before packing punch at the all-important end to win the feature in a pulse-pounding finish. Antony a darling of the crowd this season booting home more than 20 winners drew a blank and Trevor too returned home without a winning strike on the classic wek-end.

Divine Art was another top listed favourite who bit the dust. Competing in the HP Viswanathan Memorial Trophy, the Satish Narredu ward partnered by Suraj started even-money favourite before the price quickly doubled in the bookmaker's ring. The moment the bookies offered (2/1), most wise punters smelling a rat chose to stay away, while the die-hard followers of the favourites continued to support the Satish Narredu ward who was struggling to keep pace all through the 1400M trip and eventually failed to even save money in place. The eight to one shot Irish Coffee from the stables of Pradeep Annaiah piloted in determined fashion by Alex Rozario edged out the second in demand at the betting ring, Kanya Rashi by the shortest of margins, while D Gold Star followed the runner-up home.

Touted a safe `Jodi', Anigraha from trainer Vijay Singh's yard and a smart last start winner Yukikaze from the stables of Rakesh garnered the maximum support in the Bottolanda Mittoo Chengappa Memorial Trophy run over a mile. But much to the chagrin of the big bettors, the `Jodi' flew out of the window even before the half-way mark, Anigraha struggling to stay in contention to stand tall at the podium, while Yukikaze went lame a furlong after the start. The Monnappa-trained  Mystic Divine partnered by promising apprentice jockey Faiz, in a humdinger edged out the lesser fancied Freedom Touch from Arvind's yard, while Baashha, who made a bold and brave attempt to make every post a winning one did well to hang on and finish in the money ahead of the fancied Anigraha.

Monnappa and Faiz again combined effectively to record a nourishing double, coming up trumps in the concluding event run over a sprint. Astride the four to one shot One Diamond, Faiz spurred by his success on Mystic Divine, stretched every sinew to gain the day, pegging back Dali's Gold (7/1) by the proverbial whisker. The runner-up partnered by Alex Rozario in defeat was not disgraced and lives to fight another day. The public choice Natural Look from Mansoor Khan's yard raced in patches and only managed to dig a deeper hole in the pocket of the punters, who failed to recover from a couple of big blows they suffered earlier in the day.

The Bipin Salvi schooled Sea Of Adventure recorded a hat-trick, coming up tops in the KT Shamaiah Gowda Memorial Trophy, handsomely making every post a winning one in the hands of Salman Khan. The in-form winner, who is in good nick took command, the moment the nine contestants came under the starter's flag and romped home in style to the delight of his supporters, who were bullish of his chances to making it three in-a-row this season. The public choice choice Klimt from the stables of Bobby did produce her best, but that was just not good enough to stop another winning adventure in the sea of the in-form Bipin's ward.

The Vishal Yadav-trained Silver Quest and Gemini under the care of Bobby were the only two favourites who came good, the former winning the RM Puttanna Memorial Trophy with a timely late dash and Gemini gallantly pegging back Double Vision in the Sri C Sashachalam Memorial Trophy. Alluring Beauty was the one other winner in the day who had the form to succeed and did so.
