THE LAST SULTAN OF INDIAN RACING

By Karthik Ganapathy | 16 Nov 2025 |

Mr Sultan Singh

When the news of the passing of Breeder, Owner and racing enthusiast Mr.Sultan Singh broke out on the cold evening of 13th November 2025 racing lost one of the most influential, passionate, and loved people in the racing industry. The horses he bred spoke volumes of his dedication towards breeding and the some of the mares he bought at international sales like Goffs and Tettersals produced champions from the Tantalising Wonder Smile, Mesmerising Jacqueline, Mercurial Becket, spirited Enabler and the icing in his breeding career the Exemplary Juliette were some of the Greats that Thrilled the Indian Racing fraternity. He chose theses mares from thousands that were in the catalogue and was able to identify what type of pedigrees suited our Indian Racing. Apart from these he also bred many a champion who won group races like Adjudicate and Black Pearl who kept the farms flag flying high.

His romance with horse racing was unmatched. I still remember a couple of years back during one of my visits to his farm he was in the hospital and I had gone to meet him expecting him to be taking rest but what I saw was a man with his oxygen mask on but sitting up and watching Bangalore races on his ipad, that was the kind of love he had for the horses. He was a mentor and a guiding force to so many new trainers and owners whom he encouraged and gave the right advice as to which horses to buy from him. My personal experience was when I went to the farm there was a frail looking grey filly and I was very hesitant to lay my hands on her when I mentioned that she was too small the only thing he said to me was “Take her you will not regret it”, I am glad that I took his advise and she was none other than Juliette, for 7 years both Sultan as a proud Breeder and me were part of a magical journey that none can even imagine. Throughout this journey there was only encouragement, even on days when things did not go our way he only said “Let’s show them next time”. He knew exactly what she was capable of and that can only come with a keen eye for horses.

His legacy lives on in Sohna Stud Farm which was and will produce Champions. With deepest Condolences it was an honour to be a part of his Journey.

Rest Well Sir. You will always be there in our hearts.
