WESTERN STAR SHINES TO KEEP HIS UNBEATEN RECORD INTACT
By Usman Rangila | 30 Nov 2025 | MUMBAI
Mr Homi Mehta, Mr Jehangir Mehta, Mr K M Shah leading Western Star (Mustakim Alam up), winner of The Director General of Police Trophy
Despite remaining unconquered in his three career starts, Narendra Lagad-trained Western Star was less fancied than Stormy Sea in the Director General of Police Trophy, the feature event in Sunday’s card. The bay colt, however, shone brilliantly on the racetrack to keep his unbeaten record intact. Western Star fought for his head in the initial stages of the seven-furlong trip before Mustakim Alam relented and let him dictate the terms. The second favourite then stayed in the pole position and though straying from the straight course in the last furlong and half, Western Star (Dali – Lucky) held on gallantly to keep Opus Dei at bay. Singer Sargent recovered the lost ground after a lethargic start and improved well to finish third ahead of well-fancied Fourth Wing, who was piloted by K. Mukesh Kumar. Favourite Stormy Sea was settled behind the front-runners in the fourth position by NS Parmar but the colt could not find the acceleration and failed to figure on the judges’ board, finishing seventh in the nine-horse field.
The father son duo of Malesh and Yash Narredu had a successful double through Heaven’s Rhythm and Enforcer, both leaving the maiden ranks in handicap events. Akitania showed good initial speed to grab the lead with on-money favourite Surrealist and House of Lords going in pursuit whilst Heaven’s Rhythm, who lacked initial speed, raced in the rear-bunch only to warm up after the field entered the home stretch. Meanwhile, C. Umesh kept Akitania in the hunt whilst Surrealist flopped when the race came to a boil. Yash then got Heaven’s Rhythm into her stride following which the filly made steady progress with every stride and so did Rafael when A. Sandesh applied pressure. Heaven’s Rhythm (Fiero – Bubbly Bellini), however, got stronger at the finish and stretched out just in time to stride a length clear of Rafael, who beat Akitania for the runner-up berth by half a length. El Moran finished fourth, a short-head away.
Enforcer, who let down his supporters in both his previous outings, gave a speedy display in the Captain G. Hall Trophy. Backed heavily on this occasion too, Yash eased Enforcer (Excellent Art – Mahateji) into the lead shortly after the gates opened and lasted out to win from Antony Raj-ridden Charlie Brown, who stalked the winner all the way but veered out under pressure before going down at the wire by a neck. Santana Row ran thereabouts to be third, a head better of Lucio, who failed to make meaningful headway in the closing stages of the six-furlong sprint.
Sandesh notched a quick double in workman-like fashion astride Scaramouche and Baychimo right at the start of the day. Timeless Fortune inconvenienced Scaramouche before the field had sorted itself out after coming out of the barriers causing the latter to drop back even as Azure went sailing into the lead. Unruffled by the early setback, Sandesh ignited a powerful response from Scaramouche (Roderic O’Connor – Isn’t She Special) at the top of the home stretch and the Behram Cama trainee made rapid strides when coming through the shortest way home to tackle Azure in the last hundred metres and went sailing clear for a convincing victory. Azure retained the second place well ahead of Timeless Fortune and Break Point.
Baychimo put his disappointing run in the Pune Derby behind him and made a stylish appearance on the Mahalaxmi racetrack. Tyrannus seized the initiative as field took off the for the mile journey for the RR Byramji Salver and had Trevor-ridden Rosario in close attendance whilst Dedication and Baychimo followed them. When the field straightened for home, Trevor stepped up the pace to send Rosario into the lead while Sandesh got busy with Baychimo. Adhirajsingh Jodha-schooled Baychimo (French Navy – Lady Sergeant) responded well as he ranged alongside Rosario and put the issue to rest in the last furlong with a fluent run. He won comfortably despite conceding five-kilos to Rosario. Dedication ran third, just under a length in front of Bugatti.
Though neglected in the betting ring as Diego Garcia cornered overwhelming support, Pradeep Chouhan-groomed Vegatha achieved a superb win over the favourite. Trevor took Diego Garcia on a start-to-finish mission and had a handy lead till R. Ajinkya aboard Vegatha launched his bid inside the last two furlongs. Diego Garcia’s lead fizzled out in the final furlong as Vegatha (Excellent Art – She Is Special) wore him down and scampered home for a two-length victory. The favourite managed to hold on to the second spot from Exciting by a whisker. Red Merlot completed the judges’ frame.
Last-outing winner Exotic Star from trainer S. Waheed’s yard once again received a confident ride from K. Pranil as the filly defied the penalty incurred for her previous success in the concluding event. Pranil let Malboro Man enjoy the lead over the mile trip and kept Exotic Star in a striking position behind whilst Daianne raced further away. Both Daianne and Exotic Star (Saamidd – Shivalik Honour) challenged Marlboro Man in the straight with Pranil managing to pack enough punch in his riding as he swooped down on the leader a hundred metres away from home to secure a half-length verdict over Subhag Singh's ward with Daianne finishing a short-head behind. Leo The Lion ran fourth.
