OPUS DEI'S RESOLVE FETCHES HIM THE KAILASHPAT SINGHANIA TROPHY

By Usman Rangila | 21 Jan 2026 | MUMBAI

Trainer Imtiaz A Sait leading Opus Dei (Neeraj Rawal up), winner of The Kailashpat Singhania Trophy

Veteran professional Imtiaz Sait's protégé Opus Dei showed enough resolve when it mattered to claim the Kailashpat Singhania Trophy, the main event on Wednesday. Six-year-old Opus Dei, who had twice come close to earning a bracket this season, was ridden off the pace over the mile trip as Chagall wrest the lead from last-outing winner Fortunate Son soon after jumping out from the gates but made steady progress to be in the fighting line. As the field straightened for home, Opus Dei got stuck behind Destroyer and Fortunate Son, who were in chase of Chagall all the way, and it seemed to be all over for him. Favourite Eagle Day, meanwhile, launched his bid and joined stablemate Chagall inside the last furlong and half. Despite the setback he suffered, Opus Dei gave a valiant response when asked for a renewed effort by Neeraj Rawal and produced a strong gallop to overwhelm both Chagall and Eagle Day who were still locked in a tussle and gain the upper hand. Eventually, Opus Dei (Planetaire – Surprise Party) won warding off runner-up Singer Sargent, who pipped both Eagle Day and Chagall close home.

Rarely do the racegoers witness trainer Pesi Shroff leading in two winners when both are available at fancy odds in the betting ring and that too on the same day. But it happened on Wednesday! Kirtish Bhagat-ridden Marius, who started his career late and had done nothing to boast about his ability in his two outings thus far, found himself in the front when the nine-horse field started its journey for the mile event and held the advantage till being collared by Abhyankar and Renoir, who appeared to have briefly tackled him over a furlong away for home. Marius fought back to regain the lead but not before receiving 11 out of the total 15 lashes that came from Bhagat's whip when overpowered by his two rivals and went on to win the Ravi Shankar Gupta Salver (Div-II). While this pair was settling their dispute, Bhawani Singh-piloted Her Charge hung out badly in the final run-in and refused to keep a straight course despite her rider's effort to control her drift under the whip which appeared to have cost her a certain race. Her Charge took the runner-up spot though she finished on the outer rails with Renoir a neck behind in the third spot. Abhyankar completed the final frame of four with Bright Button and favourite Caradoc, who was making his first appearance this season, in tow.

Matisse, with the 5kg-claimer S. Siddarth aboard, was the second horse that Shroff led in the Edgar DeSylva Salver where his barn-mate Bishop, ridden by G. Vivek, carried the public's purse. Matisse found himself racing in the rear bunch after the runners had sorted themselves out at the start whilst Emperor Roderic showed the way and brought the field into the home stretch. Amazing Ruler and Seneca tried to challenge the leader but it was Bishop who, when shown the daylight by Vivek, came with a dazzling run to snatch the lead from Seneca in the final furlong. Just when it appeared that the winning post was within Bishop's reach, Matisse (Kingda Ka – Darinza) came with a smooth run to topple the former in the last stride. Amazing Ruler finished in the money ahead of Seneca.

Aman Hussain-schooled debutant Queen of Beauties put in a gutsy show under Akhsay Kumar's strong handling to upset the applecart of favourite Caviar Queen in the Nadia Mary Homi Wadia Trophy. Caviar Queen raced on the haunches of leader Avante and had Minari for company with Queen of Beauties in a striking position behind. Antony Raj spurred Caviar Queen into the lead inside the last two furlongs but had Queen of Beauties breathing heavily down her neck. As both the fancied runners went stride for stride towards the wire, Queen of Beauties (Sanus Per Aquam – Cameron) responded gallantly to Akshay's call and nailed Caviar Queen in the shadow of the winning post. Minari ran third ahead of Youremyeyesbaby. David Allan-partnered Magenta was slow to start and raced in the rear throughout. Shaandaar bolted riderless on the way to the gates and was withdrawn before coming under the starter's order.

Nothing seems to be going right with the horses that belong to trainer Narendra Lagad's stable, especially those which punters trust their money with. El Moran, who was ridden by David Allan on the Ladies' Derby Day and making his fourth appearance in a span of less than two months, was entrusted with rookie Avinash Paswan and the trip was shortened on this occasion. But El Moran refused to oblige once again. PS Chouhan-groomed Chelsea, who was ridden by lesser-known jockey Nirmal Jodha, darted to the front as soon as the starter's flag came down while El Moran went in pursuit. Much to the chagrin of punters, Chelsea refused to slow down as Jodha packed enough power in his efforts to lift the Heritage of Grooming Trophy, an event where jockeys were not allowed to carry a whip, in a successful start-to-finish mission. El Moran, on the other hand, could not gather momentum and was in hopeless chase of the winner all the way and even faced the ignominy of being shunted out of the runner-up berth by his older stablemate Majestic Warrior. Debutant Undercover did well to finish fourth.

The first division of the Ravi Shankar Gupta Salver also had a fluke result as Land of Plenty hailing from trainer Subhag Singh's string scored an upset victory in the hands of apprentice Ramswarup. Tajiri made the initial running over the mile journey with Dexterity, Nostalgia and favourite Youreforfame in pursuit. Land of Plenty made steady improvement in the straight to range alongside Youreforfame, who was poised to take over the running from Tajiri in the final furlong and half. Youreforfame was hard-ridden by Shrikant Kamble to gain a narrow lead but Land of Plenty (Desert God – Dahlois) gained the upper hand in the closing stages of the race to win from late-finishing Allez L'etoile, who pegged back Youreforfame on the post. Semurg ran on to take the fourth spot.

Earlier in the day, Faisal Abbas-trained Ensky improved after a forward run in the upper class and justified the favouritism when shedding her maiden status. Viennoise tried runaway tactics on this occasion and had C. Umesh-steered Ensky gnawing at her heels from the word go whilst Rise All Stars and Regal Galleria followed them behind. Ensky (Surfrider – Light) challenged Viennoise opposite the grandstand and snuffed out her challenge in the last furlong to achieve a comfortable win. Tropical Paradise got into his stride quite late but managed to take the second slot in a close finish with Lara ending third ahead of Viennoise.

Ramswarup completed a double when he steered favourite Lord Murphy to a facile win in the concluding race of the day. The betting ring witnessed the one-way flow of money in favour of the Shazaan Shah-schooled Lord Murphy, who gave no anxious moments to his supporters. After following no-hoper Golden Rule in the initial stages of the seven-furlong trip, Lord Murphy (Fiero – Historica) swept past the leader at the top of the home stretch and drew away from the field for a convincing victory. Baleno, It's My Way and Mighty Hero finished in that order behind the winner.
