SCARAMOUCHE TREATS RIVALS WITH DISDAIN IN FREE PRESS JOURNAL TROPHY

By Usman Rangila | 21 Mar 2026 | MUMBAI

Mr Jaydev M Mody and trainer Behram Cama leading Scaramouche (A Sandesh up), winner of The Free Press Journal Trophy

Having finished runner-up to Social Butterfly over a six-furlong sprint on the Derby Day, Behram Cama-saddled Scaramouche was the overwhelming favourite to claim the Free Press Journal Trophy run over the same distance on Saturday evening. Ridden by A. Sandesh, five-year-old Scaramouche brooked no opposition when making short work of his six rivals. Scaramouche (Roderic O’Connor – Isn’t She Special) hugged the rails as he kept Big Bay, his main rival who led the field, in sight and made his charge on entering the home stretch. He then dealt with Big Bay firmly inside the last three hundred metres and drew away for an emphatic win. Art Collector improved along the way from the rear to relieve Big Bay of the runner-berth, while Liban came fourth.

Sandesh earlier helped Organised Chaos achieve his maiden success in the Indiarace.com Trophy. Trevor Patel-ridden Funny Bunny, who had finished a close second to Lempika despite going miles wide in the straight on her debut last month, was the prime favourite ahead of Paloma and Organised Chaos. Sandesh had Adhirajsingh Jodha’s ward follow Chakar View into the straight and soon slipped through the rails to charge ahead. Funny Bunny, however, shifted out from a straight course once again when Trevor asked her for an effort. Just when it seemed that Organised Chaos had the race under his control, he veered out under pressure. However, Sandesh rode Organised Chaos (Dali – Kariega) vigorously to prevail by a length and a quarter over Funny Bunny, who finished on fast to deny Paloma the second place by a neck. Chakar View faded out to be fourth.

Trevor Patel started his day on a winning note astride Manwar, who displayed his staying ability over the mile and a quarter journey for the Mid-day Trophy. Pesi Shroff-saddled and C. Umesh-ridden Renoir went streaking clear shortly after the start and held on to the advantage over Marius and Allez L’Etoile as they came towards the final bend. As it often happens, the runaway leader shortened her strides close home and, meanwhile, Manwar improved from the rear to be in the reckoning. PS Chouhan-groomed Manwar (Whatsthescript – Yas Marina) picked up speed and overtook Renoir in the final furlong. He kicked on resolutely under Trevor’s whip to ward off the threat posed by runner-up Savage Peacock. Renoir retained the third spot ahead of Her Charge. The partnership of Chouhan-Trevor was successful twice later in the day with Vegatha and Desert Classic.

In a repeat of her earlier winning performance, Vegatha raced in the rear as Alpine Star dictated the terms over the seven-furlong journey with Joondalup giving the chase. The latter tackled Alpine Star soon after crossing the two-furlong post and assumed command. Trevor launched his bid when the field had straightened for home and Vegatha unleashed a powerful run to make headway and engage Joondalup in an intense battle. Vegatha (Excellent Art – She Is Special), despite conceding weight, wore down Joondalup in the shadow of the post to win by a neck. There was a scramble for the minor places as Ashwa Brazil finished in the money, a head in front of Matisse, while Vincero was a short head behind.

Desert Classic, who provided a treble for Chouhan and Trevor, simply trounced his opponents in the final race of the evening. Trevor hit the front with the shortest priced runner of the day and, once into the straight, the bay gelding left his rivals chasing his shadows and fighting for the crumbs. Eventually, Desert Classic (Phoenix Tower – Evelyn’s Dancer) scored a facile win, while Arbitrage, Pure and New Yorker followed him home in that order.

Veteran professional Mansingh Jadhav and jockey Nikhil Parmar also recorded a good double with Beast Mode and Key West. With an educative run on debut under his belt, Beast Mode was backed to the exclusion of his seven rivals, and he ran true to the expectations. Taking charge early into the five-furlong scurry for the Racingpulse.in Trophy, Beast Mode (Plumatic – Woman O War) graduated from the maiden ranks as he enjoyed an uncontested lead all the way home. Remarkable and Legadema, who entered the straight behind the winner, passed the post in the same order, while Red Rose laboured hard to finish fourth.

Favourite Aeon Flux and Key West both lacked initial speed as Dhahabi sprinted ahead but the first named soon headed the field. Sandesh-ridden Aeon Flux flattered to deceive as she failed to repel Key West (Arod – Ciel Etoile), who galloped strongly in the home stretch to force the former into submission. The filly then drew away resolutely to record her maiden success, four lengths clear of late-finishing Jagger, while Aeon Flux and Exhalt finished third and fourth.
