RANK OUTSIDERS RULE THE ROOST

Trainer K S Mandanna leading Vandhiyathevan (C Umesh up), winner of The Red Satin Plate
A series of shock results on the second day of the season floored the followers of form. From the punters point of view it was a disaster, only two favourites, Vandhiyathevan from the stables of Mandanna and the Ranjeet Shinde-trained Mind Games justifying their top billing. The Vinesh Naik schooled Knotty Methods set the shocking trend, surprising most in the opening event, the lower division of the Balamuri Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs.
The two `Knotty' owners, Kamesh and Srikanth Badruka, who led in the well fancied winning debutant Knotty Emperor in Bengaluru on Saturday, happily posed for the shutterbugs, leading in Knotty Methods on Wednesday at Mysuru, the rank outsider piloted by Shah Alam paying a rich and handsome dividend of Rs, 772 on a tenner at the tote window. It was clear that none including the `Knotty' camp fancied Knotty Methods to score, but on a day unfancied runners waltzed to victory, the Vinesh Naik ward set the trend. Another long shot Bundelkhand Queen followed the winner home ahead of Pette's Choice, while the favourite Alluring Beauty from the stables of leading trainer Rakesh after raising hopes at the top of the straight, lacked the gas in the tank to keep going and eventually finished down the field.
The upper division of the event saw the five to one shot Natural Queen from trainer Mansoor Khan's yard produce a winning gallop at the all-important end to peg back the public choice Perfect Heart from trainer Bobby's yard. Perfect Heart, it appeared needed this run and she will prove to be a different proposition next time out.
After the shocker in the opening event, Choice from K S Mandana's yard edged out the overwhelming favourite Biometric from Rakesh's yard close home in the Prince Regent Plate. The winner piloted by five-kilo claimer Jitendra Singh, travelling wide all through the 1100M dash produced a good turn of foot in the final 50 metres to upset the applecart of the favourite who looked set to justify his ranking before going down to Choice. Sunway Lagoon from the stables of Surender finished a creditable third and it will pay to keep an eye on this speedy customer, when next saddled.
Mandanna, who recorded a treble on the opening day, added two more to his kitty, the ten to one long shot Krishvi in the hands of leading pro Umesh cantering home in the lower division of the Kolar Plate. The winner assumed command approaching the distance post before quickly putting the race to bed a furlong from home. Lesser fancied Natural Look followed the winner home ahead of Martino, while the strongly supported Devate from trainer Jaishanker Pillay's yard produced a below par effort much to the disappointment of the large following. Krishvi on the strength of this sublime show appears set to provide an encore, while Devate is best left ignored until this well bred daughter of Deauville turns over a new leaf in the weeks ahead.
Spurred by the run-away success of Krishvi, Mandanna struck again in the next event through the favourite Vandhiyethevan in the Red Satin Plate run over a sprint. A confident Umesh let the public choice travel nice and easy in the mid-division for most part of the six furlongs trip before he packed punch on the grey when the race came on a boil and Vandhiyethevan to the delight of his supporters powered through to put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong.
The Pillay-trained Drisana, who impressed most with a belated effort, eye-catching second behind Rise Again in the Season Opener Trophy on the first day, again flashed home late on the scene to finished second behind the winner, while the Sebastian schooled Bluemed, a smart winner on the opening day, did well to gain the third spot ahead of Absolute Challenger.
After the disappointing effort of Devate and the satisfactory performance of Drisana, the lesser fancied Sherpa brought the smile back on the face of Pillay and the sporting owner Deepak Kumar, outclassing his 11 rivals in the Varahi Trophy run over a sprint. Alex Rozario astride the in-form Pillay trainee had it easy, raising no sweat while guiding the five-year-old home. Sherpa, it appears is in good nick and he is tipped to score again if his connections choose to quickly race him again. Lesser fancied Falcon Fury gained the runner-up berth ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring, Amazing Imrarifa, while the top fancy River Of Gold from Ruban's yard performed like a dud and finished in the ruck.
After four horses, Code Of Honour, Cloud Jumper, Polar Wind and the second in demand at the betting ring, Cosette were withdrawn in the upper division of the Kolar Plate, Mind Games from Rajnjeet Shinde's yard, who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring, donkey-licked his seven rivals to romp home by a widening margin of nine lengths. The promising apprentice Abhishek Mhatre astride the best winner of the day didn't really need to move a muscle while guiding home the overwhelming favourite, who is set to add a couple more wins before the curtain is drawn on the 11-day season. Bold Show from the stables of Ramanathan gained the runner-up berth ahead of Reign Of Terror and it will not be long before the Ramanathan trainee earns his winning bracket.
The judiciously prepared Prince Corporate from Rakesh's yard garnered the maximum support in the concluding event, the Nagamangala Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. But the top fancy after seizing the initiative at the top of the straight and looking good to land the spoils a furlong from home, much to the chagrin of his supporters failed in his mission, going down in a three-way cluster finish. The unfancied 20 to one shot Gemini from the stables of Bobby gained the day edging out another rank outsider Aurele, a `nose' separating the two, while the public choice was only a `neck' behind in a thriller.
