GOLD KITE WINS AMBA VILAS PALACE TROPHY

Trainer K Aditya leading Gold Kite (Dharshan Antony B up), winner of The Amba Vilas Palace Troph

Most favourites took a back seat and as a result most railbirds, including the more than 500 die-hard punters from Bengaluru, who travelled to Mysuru following the cancellation of off-course betting at the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) for the second successive week returned home with a hole in the pocket.  BTC, it is learnt didn't get the required license to conduct betting operations and that's largely due to the fact that the key men authorised to provide the go-ahead were busy flying up and down to Delhi.

The ten to one shot Gold Kite from Aditya's yard piloted by Darshan Antony upset the applecart of the top fancied contestant, even-money favourite Crown Drive from the stables of B Suresh and last start winner Rise Again from Fahad Khan's yard in the Amba Vilas Palace Trophy, the plum event run over a sprint.

The speedy Decacorn hit the front and called the shots before the nine runners negotiated the final curve and at this juncture, Crown Drive and Gold Kite, the two, who followed the leader streaked ahead and in the final sprint to the line, Gold Kite and Darshan Antony kicked clear to score from Rise Again, who flashed on the scene far too late and had to rest content with the runner-up berth. Crown Drive despite a good run under his belt in Bengaluru performed below par much to the disappointment of the large following who trusted the Suresh ward to come good in the hands of the talented apprentice Aleemuddin.

Suresh and Aleemuddin after failing in the feature event, struck it rich on Chief Admiral, smart winner of the Bidadi Plate run over a mile. The winner who opened at (4/1) in the ring was soon offered at double the price, money pouring in on the Jaishankar Pillay schooled Sada, who was hammered down from (2/1) to (5/4) in the betting ring. Saddam Iqbal-trained Cosette had a fare share of supporters, but the filly after jumping out dislodged her rider Imran. Alex Rozario pushed Sada to the front soon after the dozen horse field came under the starter6's flag and held the advantage till the heads turned for home. In the `run in' home, Aleemuddin and Chief Admiral, who tailed Sada all though the backstretch challenged the public choice strongly approaching the distance post and soon it was all over bar the shouting, the Suresh ward powering home in convincing style. Sada, who proved no match to the winner, it was clear needed this run and will prove to be a different proposition when saddled next.

The concluding event, the Kollegal Plate run over a distance of seven fuelongs produced a dead-heat to the delight of the railbirds. In a pulse-pounding finish, the favourite Klimit from Bobby's yard piloted by Hindu Singh and Red Falcon from Suraj Shaw's yard partnered by Arvind Kumar flashed past the post locked together and the magic eye too failed to separate the two resulting in the first dead-heat of the season. Last start winner Balgownie topped the betting board ahead of Klimit, but this Sebastian trainee found the first two too hot to handle and had to rest content with the third spot.

Earlier, the half-money favourite Storm Rider from Vinesh Naik's yard, who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring proved too good for his six rivals in the opening event, the Arakalgudu Plate run over a 1100M dash. Leading pro Ashhad Asbar who is enjoying a good summer after booting home Storm Rider, drove the Zulquarnain schooled Iron KIng to a popular victory in the lower division of the Malavalli Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The favourite backed to the exclusion of his 10 rivals made every post a winning one, pegging back the gallant effort of Walter piloted  by Hindu Singh. Asbar, it must be mentioned was at his best on the public choice and the saddle artistry made the difference at the end.

Guiding the fortunes of the favourite Just Blues in the lower division of the Chaitanya Chakram Plate, Arvind Kumar appeared to have the race in his bag a few metres from home before the rank outsider Feronia from the stables of leading trainer Rakesh powered through to snatch the verdict at the shadow of the winning post. Sah Farad Ansari's never-say-die effort on the winner tilted the scales in favour of the 20 to one nohoper against the public choice who was floored by a bolt from the blue. Lesser fancied Golden Beast from the stables of Bobby finished a creditable third and is one for the notebook.

The upper division of the event also produced a shock winner, the eight to one shot MR. Karnataka making it a start to finish affair in the hands of five-kilo claimer Md.Talib.

After the favourite Windborne was withdrawn at the gates, the public choice in no mood to enter his designated box, Eagle Bluff gained the top billing before Mr.Karnataka showed a clean pair of heels to all his 10 rivals. Hasting Sunrise followed the winner home ahead of Eagle Bluff.

In what was a very open affair, another rank outsider Red Hills reigned supreme in the upper division of the Malavalli Plate. The five to one shot Cloudy Hills, who garnered good support at end, the insiders and the right connections confident that the six-year-old mare from the stables of Bobby, who had a good run under her belt would prevail returned home disappointed, the Bobby ward failing in her mission to snuff out the challenge of the Ashwin-trained Red Hills partnered by Ayaz Khan.
